EARTHQUAKE STUDY.
— . *— VISITOR TO DOMINION. FATHER O'LEARY,. OF SYDNEY. A noted scientist and an eminent authority ott earthquakes, the Rev. Father William O'Lcary, director of Rivcrview Observatory, Sydney, arrived
in Auckland by the Zealandia this morning on a short visit to New Zealand, lie will study earthquake conditions in the Dominion, the study of earth movements being one of the main parts of his work. "New Zealand will not stop quaking. That is quite evident," said Father O'Leary. "It is in a region of weakness—the Pacific belt of weakness. Of course, nobody would pretend to be able to say exactly when the next earthquake would strike the Dominion. It is all a matter of pressure and strains in the crust of the earth. When this pressure and strain increases there has to be a readjustment. That is what causes earthquakes." Father O'Leary, who was a professor at the Roman Catholic University of Dublin, took up the appointment of director of Riverview Observatory three years ago. This is his first visit to New Zealand.
