"BACKLESS" RESTRICTION.
i SUMNER COUNCIL'S BY-LAW.
Backless bathing costumes have been fcarred Iby the Sumner Borough Council. A .by-law will, insist that the measurement from tho nape of the neck to the back of the coetumc should not be more than nine indhes.
At the last meeting of the council (says the Cliristehurch "Star"), the following report' was received from a committer: "A conference -of representatives -from? the Sumner and New Brighton -Borough' Councils was held on December 7* The following are. the details of .the costume- to be submitted to the respective councils:^ —(1) One-piece skirted costumes, without trunks, or one-piece unskirted costumes, with trunks or shorts additional; (2) measurement from hollow of the neck to the front of the costumes, six inches; (3) measurement from the nape of the neck to the back of the costume, nine inches; (4) inside length of the shorts, four inches; (5) the costume to be worn by all beach bathers over twelve years of age"
The Mayor said it was necessary to have something laid down to define costumes which would be reasonable for use on the beach The members ;of the Surf Club and of the Sunlight League had admitted to the committee that the costume described in the by-law was reasonable from every point of view
The report was approved, and it was decided ,to draft a by-law on the lines of the report „
