AUCKLAND DRAINAGE.
The scheme for the disposal of sewage from Greater Auckland that the engineer to the Drainage Board recently framed is advanced another stage. The committee of experts that drew attention to the need for this development, and suggested-Mr. Watkins' trip abroad, now endorses his proposals, and though one may wish that there had been included on the committee an engineer with special experience in this sort of work, the endorsement is weighty. The committee agrees with Mr. "Watkins that the ideal method of disposal of western sewage would be to take it to the Tasman, but they consider that his rejection of this, on the ground of expense, is justified. The two proposed outfalls, one on the Gulf coast north of Milford and one at Brown's Island, are approved, with the recommendation that as regards the first there should be further investigation. The idea of discharging. sewage at places so near to the city may seem objectionable to some, but the sewage would not be in the condition in which it is let out at Orakei, It would be purified, and the committee is satisfied that the result would be satisfactory. Numbers of cities with fewer natural advantages than Auckland manage to dispose of their sewage without creating a -nuisance, and with the use of modern methods this Auckland plan should work well. With this plan goes an extended form of control," so that there would be one authority for the whole area served. The establishment of such a control is really the first step towards carrying out the plan, and it should not be delated, ( — -
