CHRISTMAS WARES

HINTS TO SHOPPERS. ATTRACTIVE DISPLAYS. WHERE AND WHAT TO BUY. Auckland shops have never looked gayer than they do this Christmas, and they have never been better stocked with attractive goods at prices that take the hard times into account. There is, in fact, an "embarrassment of richee," and even the town-dweller will find it difficult to make a choice, while the people from the country must be quite bewildered as they stroll up and down the shopping streets. Therefore the puzzled shopper will be glad of a few hints as to what he or she may find, and where it may be found. The modern fashion of displaying as many wares as possible on stands with the price plainly marked is an excellent one. In the old days, when everything was kept on shelves or in drawers, shopping was a matter of some exploring; to-day the -shopper merely wanders through the store and sees nearly everything displayed before him.

But the hurried visitor cannot always afford the tijne to go exploring, and for him a few hints as to some of the things the shopkeepers have to offer will be very handy. Christmas is notoriously a time when people have more shopping than they can always find time for, and those that know beforehand where to look for certain articles, or where to go for a meal —most important for strangers to the town —will find their task lightened.
