SWIMMING.

NORTH SHORE CARNIVAL

CRUMP AND FRANKHAM EQUAL NEW ZEALAND RECORD.

MISS SYLVIA GRANGE BEST GIRL.

While the attendance was not up to the usual North Shore "capacity" houses, there could be no complaint at the quality of the programme or the swimming of competitors at the North Shore Club's carnival at the Tepid Baths last night in aid of the Welfare Leagues in the district. Noel Crump, although an "intermediate," in the 50 yards championship (North Shore members only) equalled the Dominion senior record of 25 2-ss. The time, however, was one-fifth slower than the New Zealand intermediate record held by W. J. Jarvis (Otago). Bob Frankham also put up identical figures in the first heat of the inter-club handicap, equalling his own Auckland and New Zealand senior championship figures. An outstanding performer was W. Morris, the Whangarei colt, who won his heat (Noel Crump scr, would have had to break 23 3-5s to beat him), and final of the junior fifty, a heat of the inter-club race, and ewam well in the final of this event only a few minutes after his victory in the former. Miss Marie Farquhar (Waitemata) did not compete at the meeting, and in her absence Miss Sylvia Grange was the outstanding lady swimmer of the evening. After defeating Miss E. Steele (who swam so well'at Waitemata carnival), Miss Grange lost a couple of yards at the ..turn in the open final, but a great effort over the final twenty-five yards enabled her to snatch another victory from the 'Varsity girl, incidentally knocking over a second off her time for the heat. The tug-o'-war proved to be a most entertaining event, and the Police triumph over the "Sea-dogs" was the most popular win of the night. More enthusiasm still was created by the great effort of little Mick Shanahan in the first heat of the open breaststroke, and the crowd was disappointed when he was placed, third to A. Gover and his own brother. The manner in which Mr. J. R. Miller, the executive officer, got through a stiff programme reflected credit upon the club, and says a good deal for his organising ability.
