ENGLISH SPORTSMEN.

HOLIDAY TOURS PLANNED.

PASSENGERS ON RANGITATA.

Among the passengers on the Rangitata were a number of English sportsmen who have come out for the fishing season. A prominent figure in the deepsea eport is Mr. White-Wickhain, ■ who has missed only three seasons since his first visit in 1021. Last season was one of them, and the break was due to an illness which he sA'ered when all arrangements for his trip had been made. Mr. White-Wickham will go up to his headquarters at Deep Water Cove early in the New Year, and will spend a couple of months at his favourite pastime.

Sir Phillip Lee Broeklehurst, who is accompanied by Lady Broeklehurst, is also keen to try his hand among the big fitsh. Sir Phillip, who has visited the Dominion before, was a member of the British Antarctic expedition in the Nimrod under Shackleton in 1007.

An enthusiastic angler making another trip is Mr. A. Matheson, whose hobby is fly fishing. He has taken many trout from New Zealand streams, and is a noted angler in England. Captain J. Haggas, a retired officer of the loth Huseara, has come out for shooting and fishing, and : is intent on deer stalking in the South Island. Licut.-Cominander C. Branson, who formerly served with the New Zealand Naval Squadron as gunnery officer on the Diomede, and retired from the service in 1929, is making a holiday trip to the Dominion. He has plaiined to spend some time trout fishing in the Taupo district.

: Major Kerr-Smiley ie making his second visit to New Zealand. On his holiday last year he purchased the two- > year-old Persian, which later went to J. T. Jamieson's stable in Sydney, and has raced with success this, season. Major Kerr-Smiley wae for 13 years a member , of the House of Commons, and his nephew is Sir Hugh Kerr-Taylor, Bart. A fishing holiday is the main purpose of his visit.
