WOMAN'S SILENCE.
SUM OF £200 CONCEALED. PROCEEDS OF "FORGERY. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, Tuesday. Not having disclosed the whereabouts of money fraudulently obtained, Eva Hoare, 43, a married woman, was sentenced to 12 months' imprisonment by the Chief Sir Michael Myers, in the Supreme Court in Wellington yesterday. The prisoner had admitted four charges of forging and uttering, and had been remanded to give her an opportunity of disclosing what had been done with the money. When the prisoner was brought up yesterday his Honor referred to the report of the probation officer on December 5, which stated that accused seemed to be feeling her position keenly. From ■what had since happened, and from a further report he had received, he did not think that was so. Prisoner had obtained £200 by forged documents, a Bum which the country would have to repay, and would also have to pay about another £50. The £200 the prisoner had concealed, or at any rate she knew yhere it was. She could have informed the authorities, and could have shown that she felt her position by doing what she could to remedy the wrong she had done. Shi had declined to do that, and had no consideration for her husband and children, or she would have said where the money was.
His Honor said he did not think it ■was in accordance with the best interests of justice that prisoner should flout the law, keep the money or give it away, and go scot free. He had ascertained that her children -would be -well looked after if she went to prison, and his Honor considered it to be his bounden duty to send her there. She had evidently suffered some deterioration of her mind, and had, been addicted to drinking methylated spirits. 'While in prison she would be cared for, and -would have a chance to get it out '"<of her system.
