LOCAL BODY COSTS.

TOO GREAT FOR FARMERS. PURPOSE OF INQUIRY. (By Telegraph.— Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day. The need for the elimination of waste and overlapping in local government was again stressed by the Prime Minister in the House yesterday, when defending the provisions of the amendment to the Hospitals Act. Mr. Forbes said that while the towns might be able to carry on the expenditure, the load was too great for the country people. "Wβ are not paying our way, said the Prime Minister, referring to hospital expenditure. "We Snow the money has to be found out of extra taxation. What would be the effect if wo told the boards, when they asked us for their subsidies, that we did not have the money 2" Local government administration and expenditure was to be the subject of inquiry, and the present bill provided one of the methods of seeing whether there was any leakage, and if there was, how it could be stopped. Relief in overhead expenses had to be given the country districts and the farmers.. If the commission under the legislation could show that reductions were possible without destroying the effect of services, it would be a wise move.
