AMICABLY SETTLED.
RESTAURANT WORKERS. WAGES SLIGHTLY REDUCED. A complete agreement was reached on all points of dispute between the representatives of the tearooms and restaurant employers and representatives of the employees at the meeting with the Conciliation Commissioner, Mr. P. Hally, this, morning. Assessors for the employers were Mise A. R. Quayle and Messrs. W. T. Long, F. Whitehead and T. Styles, with Mr. S. E. Wright as agent. Employees' assessors were Messrs. F. G. Young, W. Median, P. Ansell and Mrs. E. Butler. Mr. Hally said that the term of the agreement was for two years, commencing on Monday next. There was provision in the agreement that either party should have the right to make application to have the wages schedule reviewed at the end of the first twelve months. The wages generally have been reduced," eaid Mr. Hally, "to the extent of 14J per cent, which, includes the 10 per cent 'cut' already in operation." The ihours and general conditions would remain the same as at present under the award, the main exceptions being that the probationers' term in the dining room had been extended from 6 to 12 months, and that they were now allowed in the kitchen, the object being to teach cooking according to the requirements of the particular employer. They would be allowed to take part in the cooking of food, but would do none of the kitchen work, other than that mentioned. The remaining clausea were based for the most part on the present terms of the licensed hotels.
At the conclusion ofi the proceedings Messrs, Long and Styles remarked that the fact of the parties coming to such an amicable agreement as they had was very striking evidence of the good feeling that existed between employer and ■worker. Mr. Young, on behalf of the employees, eaid that they had done their best to come to an agreement. Although the present was regarded as a period, of depression, he trusted that during the term of the agreement things would improve and that ttie employers would receive their share of the good things going.*
