REV. MATENGA T. WAAKA.

A veteran soldier and also a priest of the Anglican Church, the Rev. Matenga Tamaroki Waaka lias died at Muriwai, 17 miles from Uisborne, at the ape of 98 years. He foitght on the British side dur'iiift the war with the Maoris, being awarded two medals, one for conspicuous service in the field. Mr. Waaka was a chief of the Ngai-Tamanuhiri tribe and was looked upon as a paramount chief of the Turanganui peoples. Mr. Waaka was an ardent Bible student, b-vinjr had as his tutor the late Bishop Leonard Williams. When the Maori War ended Mr. Waaka entered the ministry of the Anglican Church, from which he retired for health reasons in 1910.
