HORSES AT TE AROHA.

VOLIMOND IS IMPROVING. * . ' . .■ ANTIQUE THRIVING'ON HIS WORK. V oliiji,;inl .s tendon is yielding niceiy to treatment and there is., yet, hope that the JjimouU mai <•' may be again carrying her owner's colours in important 11 events this season. ' • * • • - A southern-owner who paid a visit to Ihe local-course tnis Nveek' considers it one oi the oest country training centres in tlie Aorth Islandi lie found the plough in good order, tile inner grass gallop well fitted for last work, while;the tact of horses being allowed on as much as 60 feet of the course proper, which yet shows very little sign of cutting up; was surprising. ■ it would ap'pdar that Antique is actuallythriving! on tile track work allotted him, for he, is still oil the <burly f side. It was intended that -he" should compete at the Pakuranga, Hunt meeting, but it was found impossible to have him ready to race this month-. > ' 1 Ihe Catmint horse Sargon, who is nominated ■ Pakuranga meeting, may make' it.'qdineback' in due course, jtte has been"a'ilottect slow work during the past few weeks, but can hardly be expected to run out'ar'gotid'-Stflite'and a quarter just yet'. it is. understood that Mr. P. A. Swney's Mungatobn'.has not yet settled down properly in,'his new location at Raudwick and J. T. Jainieson lias not y6t been able to start him on "the other side." Unless a change for the better is noted soon it is the owner's intention to have the Musketoon gelding returned to New Zealand before the end of the month. Keith Hall was to have his first outing this season at the Pakuranga meeting, but during the past fortnight has not been doing as well as was expected. Conse-" qucntly his name is not included in the list of nominations. A very nice yearling filly by Gay Shield —Lady Viola is now being handled by Mr. Ward, of Te Aroha West. Arch Eagle is doing well on the work allotted him. During the month he will be sent along in earnest and this season should increase his winning account materially.

A. E. Cox's team is being kept in steady work and Gigantic, Schizanthus and Bonnie Joyce will be ready, to race early in the season. Gigantic is one that takes matters very easily oil the track, without any pulling or • tearaway 'tactics, and the other pair are very similar in this respect. ilr. K. Hines, who year by year consistently races thoroughbreds bre'd by himself. believes in having his team well forward at all times. At Te Aroha West lie has a private track of live furlongs, very suitable for light A\'ork, and he has been using this for Master Urierly, King Mestor and King Musk.. This trio, now being worked on the local track, are likely to come off. quickly: The latter.two are especially well grown, and in point of confor- j mation rank with the best yet bred in a district which for many years has sent out its share of winners. King Ara. by King Lu —Lady Mestor, takes after his sire in colour and shape. He is splendidly topped, with a nice long rein and exceptionally good bone. King Tvhisk.. by Musketoon— Queen Arch, is a thick-set customer, with clean shoulders, good fore-end and powerful quarters. They both have a real racy style in action and-will be seer, out under colours early in the season. Carl Hertz has again joined the local jtrack workers and is to make his debut under silk ;tt the Pakuranga meeting, where he is to compete in the Hunters' Hurdles. Ho is a very game customer, with a fair amount of pace, and should make his mark as a hurdler later on.
