A social evening for Hies G. Groube was held at the home of her parents, at Walton. Mrs. F. Fisk, jun., was the organiser. The evening passed with dancing and games. Even a town of the sire of Hawera is alive to the needs of its women citizens, and the Borough Council has accepted a tender of £603 10/ for the erection of the Syme Memorial women's rest room. • * * • The Women's Progress Club met on Wednesday afternoon at the Higher Thouglf; Temple, Wellington Street, when an address was given by Sister Lewin on "The Seven Golden Keys," and Mrs. Ironside gave a reading. * • • • The Misses Beresford held a social evening on Thursday, when the > following pupils were presented with Trinity College certificates: —Joyce Waters (honours), May Zimmer, Claudia Over, Phyllis Reed (honours). The latter also received the prise for obtaining highest marks in the school. • * * • A card party, in aid of the funds of the Hinuera Bowling and Croquet Clubs, was held in the hall this week. A 500 tournament occupied the major portion of the evening. The prizewinners were Mrs. Barlow and Mr. Black. The consolation prizes were won by Mrs. Hancock and Mr. Germann. The Progressive Club, Y.W.C.A., held a meeting on Thursday, when Mrs. Rawley presided and Mrs. Drea"ver gave a talk on "Women's Purpose in Life." A, monologue was given by Mrs. Enderby, recitation by Mrs. Dreaver, and Mrs. Terry a sketch. The hostesses were Meedames Peckham and Breker. • • • • A dance and bridge party was organised by friends of Mr. and Mra. L. Mehrtens, on Tuesday, at Matamata. , Extras were played by Mrs. N. Banks and Mr. H. E. Schofield. After supper Mr. Stevens, on behalf of those present, presented Mr. and Mrs. Mehrtens with a case of cutlery and a jardiniere. • » v • • A surprise evening was spent at the Green Lane Congregational Hall on Thursday, on the occasion of Mr. W. A Bishop's coming of age, when musical items and games were enjoyed. At supper time the Rev. George Jackson, on behalf of the Young People's Fellowship, presented Mr. Bishop with a gold key, suitably inscribed. • * « • A meeting of the Mothers' Thought Guild was held on Tuesday afternoon at "Sunhaven," Belvedere Street, Epsom, the residence of the president, Mrs. Charles Hemus. After explaining the objects of the guild, Mrs. Hemus introduced the Rev. Wilna Constable, who delivered an interesting address on "The Childhood and Education of Helen Keller." • • • 4» On Wednesday evening Mr. and Mrs. L. Flower entertained a number of friends at their residence, Matamata, at a bridge party, in honour of Mr. and Mre. L. Mehrtens, who are removing to Dargaville. Bridge prizes were won by Mrs. Mehrtens and Mr. Mehrtens. Mrs. G. Ring won the consolation prize. Mrs. Flower received the guests in black crepe soie. Mrs. Mehrtens wore navy satin beaute. Amongst those present were: Mesdames G. Flower, L. Mehrtens, J. T. Laurenson, G. Ring, G. G. Bell, and Stockdale. • * » • A miscellaneous afternoon was held by the members of the Penwomen's Club yesterday. Miss B. Sweet presided. The programme opened with a pianoforte solo by Miss Hewson. Extracts from "The Old Lady Shows Her Medals," by J. M. Barrie, were given. The cast was Mrs. J. Barr (Mrs. Dowie), Mrs. J, Howie (Sergeant Dowie), Mrs. S. Smith (Mrs. Mickleham), Mrs.-Carte Lloyd (Mrs. Twimley), Mrs. C. D. McLean (Mrs. Haggarty). Songs were sung by Mrs. Milburn, and Mrs. Boswell read a humorous story written by herself. • • • • A bridge and 500 afternoon was held on Wednesday last in the bowl«ra' pavilion, under the auspices of tba Otahuhu Croquet Club. The president, Mrs, Gillies, presented the trophies to Mrs. Payne for bridge, Mrs. E. Piper for 500, Mrs. H. W. Hotson, the lucky number, and Mrs. G. Watson the surprise packet. The third Remuera branch of the League of Mothers held its annual meeting at the North Memorial Hall on Thursday, August 4. McPliee; treasurer, Mrs. Attwood; tea and hostess committee, Mesdames Dearsley, V. Dearsley, Stanton, Takle, Hassal, Slyfield, Couper, Lornie; librarian, Mrs. W. Gray; musical programme, Mesdames H. E. Jones and L. Hughes; convener of children's committee, Mrs. Cox; charge of monthly thought, Mrs. Ingham. During the afternoon Mra. H. E. Jones sang, accompanied by Mrs. Grant. • * • • The second day at Ascot was held in delightful weather, which was all to the benefit of the charming frocks. Little veils were worn with many of the smaller hats. Black and white, blue and white and brown—a rich cocoa or nut brown—and white, were all predominating colour schemes; and there was more than a sprinkling of white coats and skirts, made of satin serge, tussore or crepe do chine, which had a nautical air about them. The Queen chose a colour scheme of pale blue and lilac. Her gown was of pale blue georgette, while into her blue toque was introduced the lovely lilac shade which made her silk parasol. Princess Mary wore a wide-brimmed periwinkle blue straw hat with a blue dress and coat. • » • * Mrs. A. Beck, of Allandale Road, Mount Albert, gave a bridge and five hundred card party at her residence on Thursday, in aid of funds for the Mount Albert Croquet Club. Trill as host and hostess. The supper arrangements were in the hands of four of the members of the St. Peter's Women's Club, Mesdames G. Masfen, J, E. Close, E. Lister and W. Francis. A competition of book titles was won by Mrs. J. W. Wilson and Mr. Julius Williamson. The {'udges were Dr. H. C. J. Wilkie and Mr 3. E. Grimwade. The programme comprised a duet by Miss G. Lorie, violin, and Mr. Foster Brown, piano; songs by Miss Marjorie Meek, and items by pupils of Mrs. Speight; a solo dance by Rui Calkin; a skipping dance by Edith Eayres; Indian club display by Olive Surman; and a bar-bell item by Heni Calkin, Ethel Keenan, Olive Surman and Edith Eayres. The president, Mrs. A. Campbell, presided over the North cote Plunket Committee. A vote of sympathy was passed for Mrs. Morrison. Nurse J. R. Campbell reported tha': the attendances at the Northcote Plunket rooms during July had been: —Infants, 68; adults, 96; older children, 29; total, 193; in addition to which visits had been paid to homes in respect to four new cases and 25 previous cases. The general health of the babies was more satisfactory, there being a diminution in the number affected by recent epidemics. Miss Jean Stewart, of Onewa Road, will be the honorary driver for the nurae. Nurse Campbell will address the Girl Guides on "Babycraft." Subsequently the Girl Guides will attend three demonstrations at the Karitane Hospital at Auckland before obtaining the badge for babycraft. An acceptable gift of cot quilts was received from Miss Ruth Adams, of Princes Street, for necessitous cases.

The St. George's Anglican Sunday School, Papatoetoe, held their annua 1 prize-giving last evening, when the children were treated to a tea arranged by the members of the ladies' guild in the church hall. Later in the evening the prizes were presented in the Central Theatre, Papatoetoe, by the Rev. and Mrs. T. Partridge. By the courtesy of Mr. McCoombe, the theatre proprietor, the children were entertained by the screening of several comedies and by a conjuring performance given by Mr. Don *Carvon. The prize-winners were: Doreen Ward, Joan Fielden, Beryl] Havill, Francis Fielden, Joan Mayall, Marcla Wakelin, Morval Richards, Marion Trimble, Malcolm Hadlow, Cedric Gow, Walter Stoneham, Laurence Hadlow, Harold Gow, Stacey McKenzie. Bible class: Tui Morey, Lorna Richards. Choir boys: Laurence Hadlow, Harold Gow, and Stacey McKenzie. Award cards were presented to: Barbara Kirkbride, Betty Meale, Sylvia Mayall, Shirley White, Florence Rousse, Rona Wakefield, Allenby Docherty, Douglas Leighton, William Stoneham and Selwin Morey.

The Papatoetoe Old-time Dance Club held a very successful evening in the Renown Hall last night. A waltzing competition was won by Miss M. Hamilton and Mr. Hopkins, Mrs. Martin and Mr. J. Watkins. The Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss Thomas and Mr. J. BelL • • • • 1 The Matamata St. Andrew's Ladies' Guild held a social on Thursday for Presbyterian Church funds. The programme consisted of original competitions, nail-driving, bobs, ping pong and community singing, and Misses Jean Lowrie and Jean Mac Donald gave a duo dance. The hostesses were Mesdames A. Thirlwall, W. D. L. Mac Donald, A. Findlater, and K. Grover. A competition for a plate of best cakes was won by Mrs. P. Catchpole. Other competitions were won by Mr. J. McKenzie, Mrs. W. A. Gordon, Mr. W. D. L. Mac Donald, Mr. J. Huston, Mr. J. Pavidson, Mrs. A. Swinbourne, and Mr. J Davidson. # • # • The Bayswater-Belmont Women's Society held a social evening at the home of the president, Mrs. F. E. N. Gaudin, of Norwood Road, Bayswater. A programme of pianoforte solos, duets and fancy dances given by Mrs. Waddell, Misses Vera Holmes, D. O'Leary and Ina Smith was much appreciated by the guests. The winners of the competitions and a Dutch auction were Mrs. R. T. Reid, Miss O'Leary and Mr. W. Rambaud. During the evening Mrs. Gaudin, on behalf of the ladies of the society, presented Mrs. Rabbidge, hon. sec., with some Royal Doulton ware. Supper, dispensed by the ladies of the committee, brought a very enjoyable evening to a close. Among those present were: Mesdames Gaudin, W. G. Thomas, L. L. Rabbidga, H. Whitehorn, B. Smith, B. Francis, M. Blampied, R. T. Reid, Macken, A. Gyde, W. Rambaud, Powell, W. M. White, Waddell, Holmes, Edwards, Misses Joan Thomas, Ina Smith, Jean Waddell, Vera Smith, D.
