HENDERSON BRIDGE.

APPORTIONMENT OF COST.

CONFERENCE TO BE HELD,

The Henderson Town Board has advised the local bodies concerned of its apportionment of the cost of the new bridge which is to be erected on the Great North Road where it crosses the Oratia Stream at the northern exit of the township. In order to expedite the undertaking and avoid the delay of a commission, a conference of the bodies concerned is to be called later in the month, and it is anticipated that an amicable settlement will be arranged.

The existing bridge, a steel structure built in 1907, shows definite evidence of corrosion, and the Main Highways Board advised the Henderson authority that it had reached the stage of being a public danger and was, in fact, on the point of collapse. The board was instructed that it should be closed to vehicular traffic immediately. This instruction is being followed, and an alternative route over the View Road Bridge used.

In apportioning the cost the same procedure was taken ae in the case of the Whau Bridge at New Lynn. A tally of the traffic was taken and the origin and destination recorded. Until an agreement on the contributions is reached authority for the commencement of the work cannot be obtained, although a tender of £2997 has been accepted, The new structure will be in ferroconcrete and the dip in the road will be lessened by building on the level of the railing of the present bridge. The suggested allocation of the cost is as follows: Auckland City Council, 33 per cent; Waitemata County Council, 31 per cent; Henderson Town Board, 25 per cent; New Lynn Borough Council, 3 per cent; Mount Albert Borough Council, 2 per cent; Mount Eden Borough Council, 1 per cent; Glen Eden Town Board, 1 per cent; Helensville Town Board, 4 per cent. •
