MANUREWA TOWN BOARD.

The Mamirewa Town Board! held iUj fortnightly meeting laet evening, Mr. W. T. Cox, acting-chairman, presiding. Relief Workers. —Considerable eorres: pondence was received from the two relief workeVs' organisations functioning in. the district. One letter, referring to the stipulation that each relief worker should cultivate a vegetable garden, pointed out that in anamy cases the land available to individual workers was unsuitable for the purpose unless developed at considerable expense. Other factors to be considered were a probable shortage of water in view of 'the lack of a district supply, and also the doubtful tenure of the land, in many eases, occupied by the workers concerned. It was decided to notify both organisa T tions that the board would make avail? able a suitable area of land, and to remind ithem of the Unemployment Board's decision that relief workers must grow their own vegetables. Mr. C. A. Fawcett mentioned that the Welfare League wae considering securing bulk supplies of seeds, etc., for eupply at minimum cost. It was decided ito donate a sum of £2 2/ to the league's funds. Unemployment Fund Administration.—: Mr. F. H. Barnard expressed surprise at recent Press reports to the effect that the cost of administering the unemployment relief funds represented only 3 per cent of the total fund. Members stated that a current suggestion thait the cost was over 50 per cent was "very disquieting news." It was decided to write to the Unemployment Board asking that a state? ment covering the collection and adminis? tration of the total fund be furnished.

Financial Estimates.—The annual estU mates were brought forward by the clerk, Mr. H. Kay. It was mentioned that the general rate of slightly under Id in. the £1 was the lowest struck during the past ten years, and represented an average reduction in the rates of one-seventh, of a penny.

, Heavy Traffic Licenses.—Considerable discussion was devoted to recent Pr&>s inferences to heavy traffic licenses as affecting private motor lorry and truck owners. It was decided to forward a recommendation to the Highways Board that a reduced scale of fees should applyto farmers who declare that their heavy motor vehicles are for private farm worl? only.
