COAL SUPPLY.
RAILWAY REQUIREMENTS.
RUMOURS OF EXCLUSIVE CONTRACT.
STRONG PROTEST MADE.
Rumours in Huntly that the Glen. M ton Coal Company is seeking to secure an exclusive contract to supply the railways with coal, the existing contract (shared by several Waikato mines) terminating this month, ia causing some concern among other coal mine companies, and telegrams have been sent to the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes, protesting against the contract being given to the Glen Afton Company.
The Huntly Borough Council and mining compai.iee other than Glen Afton have sent a telegram expressing alarm at the 'possibility of the contract being given to the Glen Afton Company, and stating that such a contract would result in other mines working short tune. The secretary of the Huntly Business Men's Association, Mr. G. Shaw, has sent the following telegram to the Minister of Miiipe, Mr. C. E. Macmillan, Wellington: "Huntly business men strongly protest againet the railways entering into any exclusive contract for coal supplied with the Glen Afton Company. Distribution of orders would create employment for moi-3 miners and eliminate.eases of hardship. Urge your earnest co-operation."
