ZOOLOGICAL SOCIETY.
Several matters of interest were considered at the last meeting of the board of managers of the Auckland Zoological Society, over which the president, Mr. F. E. MeKenzie, presided. Messrs. Gilbert Archey and L. T. Griffin were appointed adjudicators of the essay competition among secondary school pupils, which closes at the end of the month. Advice was received that his Excellency the Governor-General, Lord Bledisloe, was pleased to accept office as patron of the society for the ensuing year. It was decided to present to the New Zealand Bird Protection Society a copy of the film taken of the white-crested shag at Little Barrier Island. Arrangements were made to renew representations to the Commissioner of State Forests for the exclusion from milling leases of the right to cut miro,_ the object being to preserve the natural food of the pigeon. The president intimated that he had been approached by a well-known Ancklnnder with a view to the society utilising 400 acres of native bush near Auckland in connection with the society's activities. It was reported by the secretary, Mr. T. W. M. Ashby, that various screenings had bcea given of the society's films and that arrangements were being made for presentations at various secondary schools. Fifteen new members were elected,
