OLYMPIC ATHLETES.
THE NEW ZEALAND CHOICE,
DISCUSSION" ON' SELECTORS.
(By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.")
WELLINGTON, this day
Beyond the fact that the team of amateur athletes to represent New Zealand at the Olympic Games at Los Angeles will probably be a small one, the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association has not yet come to any definite decision regarding it. Two selectors for the tearii were appointed at last evening's meeting of the New Zealand A.A.A. Council. A letter had been received from the secretary of the New Zealand Olympic and Empire Games Association asking to be advised by the end of the month what prospective candidates the N.Z.A.A.A. had for inclusion in the team for the Olympic Games.. Mr. Austad suggested that the Olympic Association should be advise 1 that the' team would probably be a small one, and that N.Z.A.A.A. recommendations would be submitted later. "At our next meeting," Mr. Austad said, "we can appoint a selection committee to bring forward recommendations, as we have done in .the case of previous Games." Mr. F. M. Reid thought that the committee should be appointed immediately, and he moved that Messrs. Trevor Henry, of Auckland, and P. W. Breen, of Bunedin, should be the selectors. Mr. Reid said that, as far as he knew, the selectors for many years had been from Canterbury and Wellington. He thought it advisable for the selectors to come from other centres for a change. The motion was seconded by Mr. V. Hugo. "While I agree with what Mr. Reid has said," he remarked, "I would like to §ee Mr. A. C. Kitto, of Wellington, a member of this committee." .• Mr. Austad said: "I think there is no man more in touch with the vitals of athletics in New Zealand than Mr. Kitto, and he is in a position to serve us admirably on a committee of this kind." Mr. Hugo said that his main reason for supporting Mr. Reid's motion was because year after year the selectors had come from Wellington and Canterbury. Mr. A. W. O. Travers emphasised the need for the best possible men doing the job. He would not mind if selectors came year after year from Auckland as long as "they were the most suitable men for the work. He moved that the committee should consist of Messrs. Kitto and Breen. The amendment was lost by 4 votes to 3. ' Messrs. Reid and Hugo and H. Amos were in favour of the committee consisting of Messrs. Henry and Breen, while Messrs. J. O'Sullivan, W. F. Ingram and Travers were in favour of the committee consisting of Messrs. Kitto and Breen. Mr. Reid had a proxy vote which decided the issue.
