SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

The Mount ■ Albert Ladies' Aro'ha League held their monthly meeting at the residence of Mrs* Wyberg, : when Mrs. Smythe presided. A letter of thanks to the league was received by the secretary for the many kindnesses received by the patients of the Auckland Infirmary. Miss Newton, of the Avondale Club, gave a talk. A vote of thanks was passed to the speaker, also to the hostess for the afternoon tea.

An enjoyable afternoon was given last ■ Saturday by Mrs. R. Smyth at her resi- ' dence, "Sefton," Xinwood Avenue, Mount Albert, to raiee funds for a local charity. Vocal and elocutionary items were rendered by Mrs. J. Otter, Miss G. Sussex and Miss R. Albrecht. • An amusing competition was won by Mrs. W. Ryan. Among those present were: Mesdames W. - At the nineteenth anniversary dance held under the auspices of the Loyal Calliope Lodge of Oddfellows, at Devonport, last evening, a presentation was made Miss Gillespie, who was the first lady to take all the chairs of the Order. In making the presentation of a framed certificate and collar, Mr. P. G.-Thom-son'referred to the long and active association Miss Gillespie had served in the Order, and stated-that during the past three years the lodge's numerical strength had increased from 34 to 105, greatly due to the interest manifested bv Miss Gillespie. * ■ •■■■■* * •

On Saturday evening Mr. and' Mrs Arnold Thompson, of "Bonny Glen," Rockfield Road, Penrose, held a party in honour of their little daughter's birthday. The rooms were decorated with streamers, balloons and hanging baskets of ferns, the big log fires adding a pleasa'nt note. Among those present were: Mesdames Kyle, Armstrong , . Dixon, G. In aid of St. Michael's Church, Belmont, an entertainment was held by the Sketch Club and the 8.8. Entertainers. There was a good attendance and each item was enthusiastically received. The prooramme included six sketches entitled "Pauletta," "The Boys," "The Man Upstairs," "Hard Up," "'Quad," and "Expectations," and also musical and vocal items. Those taking part were: Mesdames Proude, Hay ward, Sellars, Misses J. Verraii, K. Hammond, L. Thorpe, M. Curry, Messrs. Sharp, Sellars, Hayden, Proude, L. Davis and Eason. '

Members of the Playbox Dramatic Club held an enjoyable evening on Monday, when the hostesses were Miss Iris ScottHigginson and Miss E. Thomas. John Hastings Turner's delightful comedy, "Lilies of the . Field," was read and proved very entertaining. It received splendid treatment in the hands of the following.readers:—-The Rev. A children's concert in aid of the church fund of St. Augustine, StanleyBay, took place last evening in the church hall, when there was a large attendance. The concert was arranged by Mr. Stanley Bates. Sketches by the children of Mother Goose, in which Norma Dalley, Cassey Reed, Margaret Steven, Joy Haggett, Verna Dalley, Billy Bull, Peggy Bartrum, May Woolacott, Patsy Reed, Olwen Madden, Joyce Amesbury, Margaret Bruce, Loma McHattie, Thelma Amesbury, Gwen Anderson and Margaret Cunningham performed, took place; a dramatic sketch of pirate life by Roy Buchanan, Alfie Bain, Percy Bartrum, Donald Senn, Cedric Wynne, Jack Hoekenhall, Jack Johneton, Dave Daniel, Ernie Bain, Jack McGrane, Don Reed, Gordon Baldwin, Arthur Roberts and John Woolacott was given. All the costumes were home manufactured, out of paper, and the lighting effects were very artistic, and a dramatic play called "Mother Gooee" was put on, in which the children taking part were: Dorothy Hill, Dave Daniel, Jock Hoekenhall, M. Cunningham, Ernie Bain, Dorothy Hill, May Woolacott, Molly Ernirali, John Woolacott, Gwen. Johnson and Audrey McGrane.

A large gathering was held in the rooms of the Victoria League, Shortland Street, yesterday afternoon, when new members of the league were welcomed. The cosy rooms looked particularly attractive with bowls of violets and jonquils and vases containing sprays of bright red berries. In extending a hearty welcome to the new members, the president, Miss Mowbray, explained the aims and objects of the "league and spoke of the progress that had been made since the formation of the Auckland branch 21 years ago. There were 101 new members, she said, and many of them were there that afternoon. Mrs. J. B. Maefarlane spoke of the work of the ever ready committee and Mrs. L. S. Rickerby gave a brief outline of the work being done by the girls' committee. A feature of the afternoon was the display of a number of garments, the work of the sewing' committee, for distribution among the people in the backbloeks. This was arranged on a table at the end of the room and aroused much intereet. During the afternoon songs by Miss Marjorie Faire, who was accompanied by Miss Kent, were very much enjoyed. The hostesses for the occasion were: Lady Sindair-Lockhart, Mesdames S. A. Stride, H. H. Partridge, W. J. Napier, J. B. Macfarlene, Moorhouse, Misses Slator, Misses Murray.

A successful bridge afternoon was held at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. R. Parker Hill, Carruth Road, Papatoetoe, yesterday. The rooms were attractively decorated with violets and stocks. The winners of the bridge prizes were: First prize, Mrs. Hickson, of Otahuhu; hidden number, Mrs. W. T. S. Wilson; consolation prize, Mrs. T. Richards; five hundred prizes, first, Mrs. S. McCullough; hidden number and consolation prizes, Miss Hilda Percy. Cake guessing competitions were won by Mrs. Thompson, of Wiri and Miss Alma Seelwood. Mrs. Parker Hill wore a frock of black embossed georgette • and carried a posy of violets. The Loyal Calliope Lodge of Oddfellows held a dance at Devonport last evening in celebration of its 19th anniversary. The hall was tastefully decorated. The committee comprised Mrs. W. R. The members of the Holy Trinity Social Club, Otahuhu, were the guests of the St. Matthias , Social Club, Panniure, in the Parish Hall, Panniure, last night. Forty Otahuhu club members accepted the 'invitation, and a most enjoyable time was spent by the 150 members from both clubs in dancing and a 500 card tournament. A welcome was extended to the Otahuhu Club by Mr. J. Allen, president of the St. Matthias Club, Mr. H. P. Lovell, president of the Holy Trinity Club, responding. The winners of the Monte Carlo waltz were Mrs. Palmer and the Rev. B. C. D. Palmer. In the card tournament. Miss K Hi°-ge, of Panmure, was first in the ladies' section, while Mr. H. Freeman, also of Panmure, won the gentlemen s prize. The Rev. R. J. Stanton, vicar of Otahuhu and Panmure, presented the prizes. Among those present were: Mesdames Allen, Jacques, L.
