"STOLE CYCLE TWICE."

On charges of being drunk in Wellesley Street, breach of his prohibition order and theft of a cycle valued at £5 10/, belonging to a Maori, James Russell Geldard, aged 42, a labourer, appeared at the Police Court this morning for sentence. Detective-Sergeant Kelly said Geldard was a married man with a family of two. He was a good worker, but drank to excess. That was his downfall. ■ Mr. Hunt imposed a fine of 5/ on the first charge, £2 or seven days' imprisonment on the second, and convicted and ordered,Geldard to come up for sentence when called upon on the third count. "Can I have time to pay?" he asked. "No, certainly not," said the magistrate. "You stole this .cycle twice. Anyway, a week in gaol will get the liquor out-of your system." ■;
