WOMEN'S INSTITUTES.
PAPAMQA. Members of the Papamoa Women's Institute met in the local hall last Wednesday, Mrs. Morton occupying the chair. Twelve members of the Te Puke branch attended. Mesdames Palmer, Higgiuson and Perkins were in charge of. the demonstration, which took the form of an instructive exhibition of stitcliery, crochet and a very pretty display of lamp shades. Mr. Munro, of Rotoiti, gave an interesting' lecture on "The League of Nations." The roll call was well responded to. Hostesses .were Mrs. King and Mrs. Dixon.
PAPAROA. A pleasant afternoon was spent at the monthly meeting of the Women's Institute in the Jubilee Hall, Paparoa. About fifty ladies were present. Mrs. George Dodds read an article on the aims of women's institutes and also gave a demonstration of knitting, and Miss Trewin gave a demonstration of beadwork. Great interest was taken in the competition of articles . made from a sugar bag. This wae won by Mrs. W. Evans. The trading table was also a centre of interest. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames J. R. Cliff, Mace, T. Taylor, Birtles and Miss Birtles.
PAENGAROA. The Women's Institute held its meeting on 1 June 18, when several new members were admitted. The library committee gave a report of its progress and the books were opened up for the first time. A roll call, "What are the most marketable vegetables and seeds to grow?" led to a free discussion. Mrs. Hickson gave a reading and also a short demonstration on rug designs. The main demonstration was that of sewing machine attachments with electric motor. The bring and buy 1 table caused quite a lot of interest, with its variety of soods for sale. A parcel for the Hastings refugees was attended, to by Mrs. J. S. Black. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames MacDow6ll, Conway and Hunt.
TE PUKE. A meeting of the institute was held recently in the Parish Hall and was well attended by members. Representatives of Papamoa Institute were welcomed by the president. The routine business having been disposed of, the president, Mrs. Bostock, read a letter of appeal from Sister Esther on behalf of the poor and needy of Auckland. Members expressed their sympathy, and it was decided to leave donations with Mrs. Bostock, to be forwarded to Sister Esther. A demonstration of smocking was given by Sirs. A. M. Ryburn, and of slipper making by Mrs. Jackson, both being followed witli great interest. The hostesses for the occasion were Mesdames Delaney, Brownlee and Cosson. A "Sing, Say, or" Pay" roll call was taken, several members preferring to pay, rather than to attempt a song. Anecdotes and readings made up an enjoyable meeting.
OMAHA AND PAKIRI. A successful evening social, organised by the Women's Institute, was held in the Leigh Hall on June 8. The programme consisted of character, songs, fancy dancing in charming of green and gold, and a play presented by a few members. The hall was beautifully decorated in green and gold. Supper and dancing concluded a very enjoyable evening. Miss Scholium and ■ Mr. A., Wilmot kindly the dance music. A stall of basketware from the Institute of the Blind wa.s in charge of Mrs. Bathgate. The monthly meeting of the Institute was held in the Leigh Hall on June 17. In the absence of the president, Mrs.. Gozar was in the chair. One new member was proposed. Mrs. W. F. Harper read a report of the Women's Institute Conference. Mesdames Evans and Gozar contributed a duet. A debate entitled "Should Married -Women Teachers be Given Employment?" was held. The affirmative was presented by Mesdames J. Torkington and A. J. Matheson, and Mesdames Evans and D. Matheson spoke for the negative. Mrs. W. P. Harper read a paper entitled "jSTew Zealand Seabirds." Mrs. Bathgate had charge of the stall.
