AUCKLAND RACES.

PRINCE LU'S GREAT NORTHERN.

GREENLANE STEEPLES TO DARK PRINCE.

CATCH'EM AND GAY LAP SHARE JERVOIS.

The Auckland Racing Club's winter meeting (the Great Northern jumping carnival) opened at Ellerslie in fine weather before an excellent holiday attendance. The track is on the heavy side. Catch 'Em and Gay Lap were the division winners in the Jervois Handicap. Dark Prince and Wako King paid the dividends in the Green Lane Steeplechase. Prince Lu was first home in the Great Northern Hurdles from Lucess and Carinthia.

They're Off! THE RUNNING DESCRIBED. Big Dividend in Opening Event. Tho field for the first division of the Jervois Handicap numbered 10, and Catoma was made a warm favourite, being at a short price when the machine closed. The chestnut went a good race, but was never looking a winner in the straight and at the judge was in fourth place. Catoma carried £1398. while there was a big drop to the second fancy, King Ford, who was entrusted with £4o. c >. Taurua carried £395 and the winner, Catch 'Era, only £91, his backers receiving a solid double-figure dividend. Vandyke was first to leave thp barrier and he led early from Valciur, Full Measure, Catoma, Catch 'Em, King Ford, Good Idea, and Valreina. Across the top Full Measure was in charge from Valcuir, Valreina, King Ford, Vandyke, Catoma, Good Idea, British Princess, and Catch 'Em. Full Measure led into the straight from Valreina, King Ford, Vandyke, Valcuir, Catoma, Good Idea, and Catch 'Em. . Half-way down the straight Vandyke took charge and looked like winning. Then Catch 'Em emerged from the field, and, puttmg in a great finishing run, got up to wear Vandyke down and win by a neck. Taurua, who came from a long way back, was a length away third, followed .by Catoma, Geld Lily, King Ford, Valcuir, Te Hoia, British Princess. Full Measure, and Good Idea.

Another Favourite Beaten. Xine lined up for the Green Lane Steeplechase, and backers made Pangolin favourite, with £744 entrusted to him. McDonald's mount did not last long, toppling over at the first of the two fencee on top of the hill. Dark Prince ( £099) was second favourite, and he pulled his backers through by winning nicely. Dark Prince went out in the lead, and piloted the field up the hill from Paris, Pangolin, Senora, Wako King and Lupin Abbey. Pangolin fell at the first fence on top, and at the stand double the order was Dark Prince, Wako King, Paris, Lupin Abbey, Kaokaoroa, Scaramouche and Quinsilia. Going up the Mil the last time Dark Prince was followed by Lupin Abbey, Kaokaoroa and Senora, Quinsilia having been pulled up. Dark Prince continued to hold his lead down the hill and up the straight, and won by four lengths from Wako King, who beat Lupin Abbey by eight lengths, Paris was fourth, followed by Kaokaoroa and Senora.

At Odds On. The saj'ing, "The bigger the field, the bigger the certainty," was borne out in the second division of the Jervois Handicap, when, in a field of 18, Gay Lap, I with Gray in the saddle, was backed idown to edds on. When he left the I barrier he carried £2072 of backers' money, the second favourite being Jalldy Karo with £010 on his chance. Te Money was third choice with £4(59, while Emancipation, who beat all but tho favourite, carried only £99, and paid a double figure dividend for second. Grand Talk was the early leader from Rafflight, Wild Country, Te Money, Lord Val, Gay Lap and Te Ngeru. Rafflight had run to the front crossing the top, leading from Te Ngeru, Gay Lap, Grand Talk, Lord Val, Jalldy Karo and Emancipation. Rafflight was still the pilot turning into the straight, with Te Ngeru next, and the favourite third, just behind him coding Lord Val, Wild Country and Emancipation. Once straightened up for the judge Gay Lap ran to the front, and going on won nicely by a length and a half from Emancipation, who finished well and beat Lord Val by half a head for second money. Grand Talk was fourth, and after her came Grand Spirit, Rafflight, Valmarie, Bronze Tray, Jalldy Karo and Royal Survey.

Outsider of Field. Backers were all astray in their summing up of the position in the Penrose Hurdle Race, in which Cristobel, the outsider of the field of eight, scored a decisive victory by leading from end to end and winning by six lengths from another outsider in Patutahi. The favourite, Landmark, carried £1015, but his supporters were not kept long in suspense, as he toppled over at the first fence. The second favourite, Marble King, with £1094, was always in a good position till the straight was reached, when he dropped back and finished seventh. Cristobel at once took up the role of pacemaker, the favourite, Landmark going out at the first fence and passing the. stand Cristobel led Owairaka, Marble King, Pendavies, Loving Cup, Patutahi and Kairuri in that o'rder. There was no alteration in the positions along the back, and crossing the top Cristobel was still well clear of Cnvairaka, Marble King, Patutahi and Loving Cup. Cristobel had a substantial advantage turning into the straight, and was never threatened, winning easily by half a dozen lengths from Patutahi, who beat Loving Cup by a length. Pendavies was fourth, followed by Owairaka, Marble King and Kairuri.

A Fast Two Miles. Glenrossie failed to leave the mark in the King George Handicap. Great Logan was smartest out, but Vesuvius took charge at the end of a furlong, followed by Great Logan and Sir Author, while a little further on Dundas Boy, The Abbey and Pluto were next. Vesuvius had a lead of two lengths starting on the last lap, with Great Logan, Sir Author and Lindbergh handy. Half a mile from home Vesuvius was out three lengths in front, with Sir Author, Lindbergh and Dundas Boy in a line at the head of the othere. Lindberg took second place a little further on, following Vesuvius to the straight, with Dundas Boy next, while Logan Chief was closing up with a fast run. Vesuvius held his place and won comfortably by two lengths, Logan Chief getting up in time to beat Lindbergh by a head. Dundas Boy was three lengths away fourth. Time, 4.20 1-5, 4.19, 4.20 2-«3.

The Great Northern. The Great Northern Hurdles was a triumph for the Cambridge trainer, W. J. McLean, and the sire Lucullus. The former prepared Prince Lu and Lucess, who ran first and second, while Lucullus eired the whole of the placegetters. Many reduced the field to 14 horses and Lucess was made favourite, carrying £1325. Make L*p was second in demand with £806, Claremore next (£832), and the ultimate winner, Prince Lu, was the outsider but one. carrying £237. He also carried 9.6, or 21b overweight. The race started down the straight and when they jumped off, Lucess was first out from Apache, Make Up, Prince Lu, Master Lu and High Pitch, Easterly, Singleton, Mister Gamp, Claremore, Nukumai, Spalpiko, Carinthia and Perle de Leon, that being the order going past the stand. Master Lu toppled over at the first fence. Easterly and Mister Ganip came down at the second, and Spaipiko went out at the third. After completing a round, and racing past the etand the second time, Prince Lu M - as the leader from Singleton, High Pitch, Apache, Lucess, Make Up, Nukumai, Claremore, Carinthia and Perle. de Leon. Carinthia made a faulty jump and was nearly down at the fence opposite the stewards' stand.- Along the back Prince Lu was still making play in front from Singleton, High Pitch. Apache, Make Up, Lucess, Nukumai, Claremore and Carinthia. At the fence near the five-furlong post High Pitch and Make Up came to grief. Prince Lu led across the top From Singleton, Lucees, Nukumai, Apache, Carinthia, Claremore and Perle de Leon. Singleton and Apache toppled, over at the second fence from liorne, and Prince Lu still had charge entering the straight from Lucess, Carinthia and Nukumai. In the run home the order was maintained. Prince Lu holding his advantage to win by four lengths with Carinthia six lengths away, followed by Nukumai, Perle de Leon and Claremore. Detailed results: —

FASHIONS ON LAWN. Smart Models in Tweed. — Beautiful Furs and Coats.— Popular Beret Hat. Despite doubtful weather in the morning, many striking models were to be seen on the lawn at Ellerslie. The course, which is always renowned for its beauty, looked particularly beautiful, and many were the exclamations of delight at the beauty of the flower beds set in the bright green of the lawns, and the picturesque oaks which, so green in the spring, are now enjoying the change to autumn tints.
