MAJOR H. J. REDMOND, M.B.E.
A well-known military officer, Major Henry Joseph Redmond, died on May 20, aged 56 years. He was born in Wellington, a son of Mr. T. P. Redmond, one i of the earliest settlers there. Major Redmond was in the Land and Income Tax Department, and for many years was actively associated with the volun- j teer movement. He was a coloursergeant in the Civil Service Rifles, and i in 1902 was appointed staff sergeantmajor in the Defence Department, being stationed for 10 years at Xelson. He was promoted to lieutenant and transferred to Oamaru, being later made captain in charge of the 10th Regimental District, Xorth Qtago. Major Redmond
| was next transferred to Dur.edin in 191 S. ; and to Auckland in 1920, being promoted to major in 1930, in which year he retired. Major Redmond was awarded the ' M.B.E. for services curing the Great War and was also the first man in Xew Zea- | land to receive the Stead gold medal of ] the Royal Humane Society. He saved j the lives of four people in 1906, in a \ coach accident in the flooded "Collins ) River, between Blenheim and Xelson. For many years Major Redmond did | good service as honorary instructor in ! swimming to the young folk of Stanley j Bay, where he lived. He was also one | of the leading members of the Auckland j Military Sports Association, was for j many years a member of the Auckland j Rugby Union and at the time of his j death was president of the Xorth Shore! j Rugby Football Club. Major Redmond j was, in addition, a leading member of | the Auckland Operatic Society and had given valuable assistance as a producer! to the University students and other amateur societies. j
