MARRIED TEACHERS.
DISMISSAL OF WOMEN. APPLICATIONS FOR EXEMPTION. CONSIDERATION BY COMMITTEE. A total of 120 replies have been received by the Auckland Education Board in response to its request to married women teachers in its service to state reasons why their engagement should not be terminated. The board recently decided, in view of the present economic conditions, to dismiss married women who were teaching while their husbands were in good circumstances. After a discussion in committee on the best method of deciding the merits of the applications for exemption from dismissal, the board set up a committee consisting of the chairman (Mr. A. Burns), the senior inspector (Mr. J. Robertson), and Mr. T. U. Wells to consider the applications, and report to a special meeting of the board prior to the next general meeting. In regard to the board's proposal to terminate the employment of married women teachers, the Kaitangiweka (King Country) school committee wrote stating if the present married woman teacher was removed, parents of the district would be compelled to provide board and lodging for another teacher. It was decided to take no action in the. case.
