SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

The executive of the League of Nations Union, Auckland branch, entertained Mr. Vivian Gordon, secretary of conference for world peace through religion, Mrs. Gordon and Dr. Gibb, Dominion president of the League of Nations Union, at morning tea in the lounge of the Lyceum Club on Monday. Mr. and Mrs. Gordon are on their way to Australia by the Aorangi, and later in the day they were taken for a motor drive around Auckland.

An interesting reunion took place on Saturday afternoon in the lounge of the Lyceum Club, when Mrs. Charles Smith entertained the first members of the Women's Division of the St. John Ambulance Brigade in commemoration of their work 25 yea'rs ago, of which Mrs. Smith was the first superintendent. Amongst those who gathered together after all these years were Miss Marion MeLeod, Miss May Melville, Mrs. Smitherst and Mrs. M. Sanford.

A surprise party to celebrate the term holidays was taken by Miss Pat ScottYoung and Miss Ngaere Hammon to the home of Miss Joan Crouch, Royce Avenue, Mount Eden, on Monday night. At a meeting of the Mount Albert W.C.T.U., held on Thursday, a motion of sympathy with the relatives of the late Lady Stout was passed. Mrs. Cook gave an interesting talk on the Dominion convention, and a jumble sale was decided upon. The first of the drawing room meetings is to be held at the home of the president, Miss Fyfe, Belmont Road, on May 28. The hostesses (Mrs. Brodie and Miss Cunningham) served afternoon tea, and Mrs. Harvey sang.

A party was given in the lounge of the Lyceum Club by Mrs. Tewsley, in honour of her sister, Mrs. Oldham, who is visiting Auckland from Dunedin. The room was gay with the bright colours of autumn leaves, late chrysanthemums and the green blooms of the winter hydrangea blossom. Amongst the guests were Lady Stringer, Lady Bankart, Mesdames W. Mr. and Mrs. A. P. von Schramn, of "The Garth," Henderson, gave a coming-of-age party for their only daughter, Dorothy, on' Saturday evening. Dancing and games were enjoyed by the numerous guests, and Miss Schramn was presented with a large chocolate key.' Mrs. von Schramn received the guests wearing a frock of scarlet georgette, and a bridge coat of black silk lace. The Gardening Circle of the Lyceum Club held a chrysanthemum show yesterday morning, at which a prize was offered for the best-grown bloom and the nearest to perfection flower. It was won by Mrs. Sclinauer, with a lemon yellow incurved chrysanthemum. The' judge, Major Stilwell, praised the bloom as being nearly perfect. Exhibits were sent in by Mesdames Macinorran, Bray, Cleal, and Whitley. Amongst those present were: Mesdames Howard, Dickinson, Hammond-Hyde, Metcalfe, Clark, Harrison, Pascoe, Clark-Walker, Drury, Bray, Hewlett, Macmorran, Ely, Whitley, Douglas, Clinch, Cleal, Johnston, Anderson, Irwin, Schnauer, Brooks, Heather, Morris, Loosemore, Talbot, Ballantyne, Gray, Beckett, Shaw, Rishworth, Hopkins, Misses Sinclair, Lavers, Goldie, M. St. Luke's Parish Hall was gay with large bowls of hydrangas when it was arranged as a drawing room for a bridge and 500 afternoon. There was a large number of interested players present, who spent a very enjoyable afternoon yesterday. Mrs. George Coats, president of the Ladies' Guild received the guests. Among those present were:' Mesdames Cheeseman, McNaughton, Ellis, Hadlow, Runciman, Ibbotson, Sharpies, Atkinson, Page, Henderson, Weaver, Clepens, Swanson, Fuller, A. E. Smith, Maxwell, Thompson, Mcßride, Forsythe, Coles, Varley, H. Clay, Pegler, Garlick, G. E. Coles, Coxcroft, Owens, de Berg, McGregor, Fowler. During the afternoon musical items were given by Miss de Berg, who sang "Can t Remember" and "The Wind." The prizes were won by Mesdames Garlick and Weaver.

The Stanley Bay Croquet Club held its first card afternoon on Monday, May 18, in the Ngataringa Tennis Club pavilion. Mrs. Callow, vice-president, opened the afternoon in the absence of Mrs. Perser, the president. There was a very good attendance. Amongst those present were: Mesdames Callow, Jones, Bremner, Clark, Weller, Darroch, Salmon, Wyatt, Mair, Pollard, Hancock, Bardell, Hughes, Chatfield, Oligivie, Burtram, Chapman, Spraggon, Jones, sen., Clark, sen., Spinley, Prime, Holt, Cunningham, Aimsbury, Bush, Walsh, Spicer, Cleal, Brooks, Cusworth, Donaldson, Jamieson, Cleland-Portie, Watson, Firth, Baker, Wrigley, Parker, Beck, Dalton, Chalton, Misses Gribbon, Powell, Burgess, *Duder. The prize winners were: Mrs. Wyatt, for stationery bridge; Mrs. Mair, progressive bridge; Mrs. Chalton, euchre. Afternoon tea was served by the ladies of the club.

The ladies of the Point Chevalier branch of the St. Vincent de Paul Society held a successful children's fancy dress dance in the St. Francis' school on Monday evening. The hall was briiliant with bunting and streamers, and with the multi-coloured dresses of the dancers presented a charming spectacle for the huge crowd of spectators who thronged the hall. The costumes were judged by Mr. J. S. Fletcher, M.P. for Grey Lynn, and Mrs. Fletcher. The prize-winners were as follow:—Caleta Lorrigan (flower basket), Olive Johnston (winter), Gloria Lorrigan (wedding bell), Mollie French (seaweed), Mollie McCarthy (Irish colleen), Oriel Ross (carnival), Amie Roberts (flower girl), Kathleen Findlay (Humpty Dumpty), Annie King (hula girl), Mollie Findlay (Japanese lantern), Valmai Roberts (bride), Betty Taplin (bridegroom), Joyce Short (bridesmaid), Raymond Green (best man), Bell Stewart (Indian squaw), Noel Baker (boy blue), Bunty Edwards (plus fours), Kevin Ross (harlequin), Lindsay Jones (Red Indian), Jack Carr (rat), Ken McIntyre (Charlie Chaplin), Frank Turnwald (wireless), Donald Frogatt (old salt), Joan Anderson and Trevor Frogatt (Darby and Joan), Gwen Goffin and Lloyd Edwards (Irish bride and bridegroom), Walter Goffin (sky raider). Mr. J. S. Fletcher commented on the variety of costumes, and congratulated the parents for the and skill that had been exercised in designing and constructing the many noyel features embodied in the costumes. Mrs. Fletcher presented the prizes that had been given for competition, and also awaidcd several additional prizes on behalf _of Mr. Fletcher and herself. The evening concluded with supper that had been 1 supplied .by the ladies of the district.

An enjoyable dance was held by the members of the New Zealand Pekinese Dog and Persian Cat Club at the Symondsville Studio last evening. Imitation rata blossom and tiny coloured lights made the room most attractive, and excellent music was supplied for dancing. Flowers and greenery also added to the effect, and on the supper tables were beautiful blooms of autumn flowers. The guests were received on arrival by Mr. S. A. Moore, president of the club, and Mrs. Moore, who wore a frock of black georgette, with coatee in black velvet. She was presented with a bouquet of flowers tied with ribbons ill the club colours, Mr. Marshall, secretary of the club, making the presentation. Among those present were:—Mrs. Marshall, wearing a frock of blue and gold brocade; Mrs. Daniels, black georgette; Mrs. Taylor, black satin; Mrs. C. J. Moore (Whangarei), amethyst shaded taffeta; Mrs. Frost, Burgundy shaded crepe de chine; Mrs. J. H.
