LENIENCY ABUSED.

TROUBLESOME LABOURER. IMPRISONED FOR ASSAULT. Because he did not behave himself after being leniently dealt with by Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., at the Police Court yesterday, William George Russell, aged 29, a labourer, was sent to prison -for 14 days this morning. Russell was yesterday charged with using indecent v language, committal!,' mischief by wilfully damaging furniture to the extent of £1 and assaulting Constable Collins, of Koliimarama, while in the execution of his duty. The police stated that accused went home the worse for liquor and after creating trouble with his mother, usoJ indecent language and smashed some furniture. When Constable Collins was called, Russell struck him on the eye. .. For assaulting the constable, Russeil was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called upon within six months. On the charge of using indecent language he was fined £2, or seven days' imprisonment, and on tJie other charge he was convicted and discharged, He was also ordered to take out a prohibition order. This morning accused appeared on tnc original charge of assault. Constablo Collins, in evidence, saul Russell, reached home at 6.45 last evening, under the influence of iiquor. It was alleged that he struck his sister on the head with a small shovel. Witness ■ was • summoned and arrested Russell. Russell remarked on the wsv to the. lock-up, "They are trying to make a criminal of me, I-don't care whether I get three months or three years. Constable Collins added that he served accused with a prohibition order yesterday morning. Mr. Hunt: And he couies home intoxicated again after I gave him a chance yesterday. Have you anything to say? Russell: No, nothing. After sentencing Russell to prison for 14 days; the magistrate remarked that it would enable him to get the drink out of his system.
