Threatening Crowds at British By-election. ' BAGE AGAINST MOSLEY. LONDON, May 1. Amazing scenes followed the declaration of the poll at Ashton-under-Lyne, the result • of which gave the Tories a win over Labour. This is the first seat to bo contested by Sir Oswald Moslcy's new party. . A threatening crowd outside the Town Hall blamed the new party for the success of the Conservatives.
Mr. Young, the Mosley candidate, was smuggled out by a side exit under a strong police guard. Sir Oswald and Lady Cynthiji Mosley, and also some of their supporters, attempted to follow, but the crowd of 20,000 people blocked the way. Fists were shaken in. their faces and cries of "Traitor!" "Dirty dog! You let the Tories in/' Avcro heard. An attack seemed imminent when Sir Oswald, without a hat and smiling, faced the crowd. Eventually he was escorted to his hotel, where another huge crowd blocked the doors. Later he addressed them from a balcony and said he was delighted with the votes given to Mr. Young.
