SHOOTING SEASON.

SMALL BAGS SECURED. i — I SUCCESS OF AUCKLAND PARTY. ! The arrival of lib' brace of ducks for jan Auckland firm of butchers by an I early train from Rotorua this morning testified to the fact that the shooting season is well under way. and that in some quarters at least satisfactory bags j are being scoured. Litter trains brought i birds from other quarters. The conditions yesterday for the opening of the season were unfavourable, a strong breeze hampering sportsmen, and the recent heavy rains making conditions uncomfortable for them. The flights in the Rangiriri district arj reported to Lave been poor, | to the rise in the river level and the j birds deserting the swamps to a considerable extent. Shooting fr Thompson's lagoon, however, Mr. F. Seccombe j and his party from Auckland shot the j limit of birds for five guns on the first J morning, and this morning took SO. Generally speaking, however, the bags were below expectation-, and the experi- j ence of Mr. Seccombe's party was an exception. At Tokaanu the weather was fine yes- j terday. but a high southerly wind was j detrimental to the securing of good bags. The largest individual bag was j eleven. A party of seven, including Sir j Dou-las Hall, shooting in the near Motuopua. took only 22 birds. Shooting on the shores of Lake Taupe. near Tokaanu. Mr. S. Gillies, of Taupo. j secured ten ducks. Many others shoot- j I [ng near at hand got only one or two. j I while many returned with empty bags. 1 ' THERMAL DISTRICT REPORTS (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent. I ROTORUA, this day. Boisterous weather prevailed for the ; opening of the shooting Fair; bags have 'been secured at Tokaanu, | !
