BEAUTIFYING SOCIETY.
MEETING AT OTAHUHU. In the absence of the president, Mr. G. W. Hutchison, Mr. J. B. Paterson presided over the first meeting of the season of the Great. South Road Beautifying Society, in the Borough Council Chambers, Otahuhu. The Balance-sheet showed that the society had the sum of £29 1/3 in hand. A sub-committee, comprising Messrs. Butterworth, McCallum, Paterson, Willis and Leonard, was appointed ito inspect the triangle at Takanini, and also to carry out a survey of the Great South Road from Green Lane to Papakura for the purpose of drawing up a winter works programme. The secretary reported that the improvement of frontages competition had drawn five entrants. Professor Knight, of the Auckland University, has agreed ; to set Ins students a test for the designing of a suitable boundary site for erection on ithe road at the boundaries, of the local bodies' districts. The society resolved to award a prize of £2 2/ to the successful S The Railway Department advised the society that it would lease several small plots of land for beautifying purposes but as this could not be legalised until the society was an incorporated body it was decided to apply for registration under the R*eference was made to the fine improvements effected by the Otahuhu Borough Council to the War Memorial Reserve, and to the front of the Council Chambers. Mr. F. W. Grey, on behalf of the Otahuhu Borough Council, assured the society of the council's support in the beautifying scheme. J
