DRIVERS' LICENSES.
NEW TESTS FOB MOTORISTS. . EYESIGHT AND HEARING. Motor drivers' licenses are now being issued by the Auckland City Council and other local bodies for the year which begins on June 1. Under the new regulations gazetted last month these licenses must be obtained in the district where the drivers live, and it is no longer permissible for a resident of one district to get his licens'e in another district. Mr. G. R. Hogan, chief traffic inspector of the city, said to-day that new applicants would require to pass eyesight and hearing tests, and would have to show a knowledge of traffic laws and driving signals, be able to estimate speed and distance, prove their ability, wherever possible, on tram routes and at controlled intersections, and show that they were capable of managing their cars on hills and in narrow streets. Taxi drivers and omnibus drivers would have.to pass an extra test by reversing in a narrow lane, turning and again reversing for 25 yards, and would have to be capable of making minor adjustments and repairs, and be familiar with the street system of the city. Last year 10,000 licenses were issued by the Auckland City Council. In the case of renewals the procedure is simple, and an application is all that is necessary, accompanied by the expiring license.
