LESS MONEY FOR PRIZES.
GRAMMAR SCHOOL BUDGET
ECONOMIES AMOUNT TO £244,
In a budget of £6601 the Auckland Grammar Schools Board expects to,, have a margin of £244 for contingencies this year, by reducing expenditure in several directions. Money for prizes will be limited to £15 for each of the five schools, which means a total saving of £50. Prof. A. P. W. Thomas, chairman, said that the committee which recommended the economies was unwilling to abolish prizes. At the older schools there were valuable endowments for prizes, but the later schools were not so endowed. A saving of £80 would be made by sending out term reports by the pupils, instead of posting them. Sports subsidies would be abolished, and the amounts for libraries would be reduced to £10 for each school. The total of £244 was not a large amount, said Prof. Thomas, but the committee had carried out a careful investigation.
