TRAMWAY EXTENSION 'BEGINS
■ 'The. concreting of the Three Kings JRoad, from Landscape Road to the. Mount. Albert -Road, has been'• completed by; Mount Roekill Road"Board, and work, preliminary to the , laying of tram tracks for; the further extension of the Mount Eden'.tramway service, has been commenced. . • . .. M I v The excavation of the remains of'the oldi mef al : road, between the concrete stri'pe on. either side of the new road, was started last week by the Auckland Transport Board, which: stipulated definitely that it would'not complete the Mount Eden extension till the . Three Kiiigs Road, through. to the Veterans' Home, was laid down in ' permanent malerial. -
The new road having been , satisfactorily 'completed, the board proposes to start almost immediately with the buijding up of.the new tram track and the'laying down of rails. Men at present engaged on the Richmond. - Roa d extension, cm which a service- will be run from, about February 10.next,, are to !be transferred to the Three Kings Road.' It is expected that, within ;a week or so, 40 or 50 men'will be engaged in pushing the extension through to Mount Albert Road, a distance from the present - terminus,. just above Landscape Road, of 57 chains. / '
The, Mount Roskill Road Board has lost no time in carrying out its part of the contract, and, thereby, has facilitated the prospects of securing ' an efficient transport, servjce for its district. About, the middle of last year, a poll of ratepayers sanctioned the raising of £40,000 for the construction in concrete of jthe Three Kings Road. All preliminaries; to the raising of the money were pujr,through with dispatch, with, the result i that 1 theroadwdrk .was actually; starred on September 8. Contract .labour"-has ' carried the scheme,' which includes the formation of paths on either side of the .road, to fruition. Watermains~ have" been sunk Connections made to various properties ; al6ng : tarring;
and sanding of the pavements will be started as eobn as sewerage reticulation has been finished, at a cost of £4500.
Until the Transport Board's workmen have finished their excavation operations and cleared away plant that is likely to prove an obstruction, the new highway will not be opened' to general traffic. Meanwhile vehicles travelling to and from Mount Roskill will have to use the deviation along St. Andrew's Road.
It how remains for the -Mount Eden Borough Council to link up its concrete in Mount Eden Road with the Three Kings Road, a distance of 66ft, and an excellent new traffic route to bays on the Manukau Harbour will be provided.
