CANDID MINISTER,

SYDNEY, January 19

Representatives of metropolitan and country .< racing cjubs to-day discussed with Mr. M. Gosling, Chief Secretary, New South Wales, the serious effects pf the winning bets tax.

Mr. Colin Stephen, chairman of the Australian Jockey Club, was the chief speaker. He said a number of the , smaller clubs would be unable to carry on owing to the diminution in attendances and revenue from customary sources and the marked growth of illegal betting.

Mr. Gosling replied that the Cabinet was not a racing Cabinet. Still it appreciated the fact that Australians liked their racing and their betting. . The Premier, Mr. J. T. Lang, was determined that racing should bear its full share of the present day burdens.

There was no escape, but if the racing bodies had an alternative plan for the present method the Government would be prepared to meet the.representatives of the clubs in conference.
