' .AUCKLANDERS AT NEW PLYMOUTH. ' NEW PLYMOUTH, Tuesday. There were no surprises in the results of. the first day's play in the North Island and Taranaki tennis championship tournament. All the noted players won their matches. In the second round of the men's singles Steadman (Auckland) beat_ L. Berg (New Plymouth), L. France (Wellington) beat' K. W. Dyer (Wellington), R. A. Court (Otago) beat R. B. Hardy ; (Auckland), Rhodes Williams (Christchurch) beat E. Ogier (Wanganui), N. R. C. Wilson (Wellington) beat A. K. Turner (Auckland), M. L. Lampe (Wanganui) beat W. J. Melody (Wellington), and J. C. Charters (Whangarei) beat R. J. Pickwell (New Plymouth). In the third round Steadman beat Davys and France beat Court. . Iu the men's doubles Steadman and Wilson won their matches ill the first and second rqunds. In the first round of .the ladies' singles Mrs. Berg (New Plymouth) beat Miss G. Pneedy (Wellington), Mrs. Melody (Wellington) " beat Miss Best (Wanganui), and Miss M. Macfarlane (Auckland) beat Miss Zeisler (Wanganui). In the second round Miss Jean Ward (Stratford) beat Miss-Todd .(Wellington), and Miss Ramsay (Auckland) beat Miss Mackay (Whangarei). In the ladies' doubles Mrs. Melody and Mies Macfarlane beat Misses Ward and Mackay, and in the second round of the combined doubles Wilson and Mrs. Melody beat Dickie and Miss Grahame.

C GRADE CHAMPIONSHIPS. The results of the semi-finals and finals of the combined doubles event of the C grade and outer suburban tennis championships, played last night, were as under:—• Semi-finals.—Miss Bryant and McFarlane heat Mrs. Annan and Gelding, 6—3, 6—3; Miss Bottrell and Chalmers beat Miss James and Wood, 6—2. 5—7. 6—4. Final.—Miss Bottrell and Chalmers beat Miss Bryant and McFarlane, 6—2, 6—3. The semi-final of the men's singles will be played to-day at 5.30 p.m.. between Chalmers and and the winner will meet O'Connor in the final. ............
