(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) NEW PLYMOUTH, this day. , More" trouble was caused by treacherous surf at New Plymouth yesterday, and five people had to be rescued from drowning on the Oakura and Fitzroy beaches. This brings the total rescues for.the holiday season up. to fifteen. Three of the rescues were effected on the Oakura beach, one one of those brought to safety was Mr. G. Hannan, of New Plymouth, who went to the assista woman in difficulty. He is now in hospital suffering from water on the lungs. Mr. Hannan is not a strong N swimmer, and those on the beach give the highest praise for liis heroic action. He reached the woman and tried to hold her up. However, the set was too strong and she was carried from his grasp. He made after her again. A life-line was brought out, and both were dragged ashore. Mr. Hannan was almost unconscious and his rescuers had to work for a considerable-time to revive him. At Fitzroy beach a man and a woman were caught by the. set and carried beyond the surf. A strong backwash made it difficult to bring them to shore, but a human chain was formed and they were brought to safety.
