TROUT FISHING.

SEASON MAY BE LATE.

LAKE TAXJPO VERY LOW.

SPAWNING RETARDED.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) ROTORUA, Monday. There are indications that the fishing eeason in Rotorua and Taupo districts will be later this year than usual. While no definite explanation of the backward conditions is forthcoming, it would appear that climatic influences are mainly responsible. The "run" of fish to the spawning ibeds has been exceptionally slow, and the dry weather experienced during the autumn and early winter prevented tho iieual flow of flood water in the tributary streams. The level of Lake Eotorua has not fallen to any marked degree, but at Taupo there has been a record drop. One resident who has spent practically the whole of his life there declares that he has never seen the lake so low. Tongariro River, which should be up 10ft. has not been flooded all the winter. This absence of flood water in the rivere has, naturally, retarded the free run of the fi.3h to their customary breeding grounds, and sport on the lakes will be set back accordingly. However, this does not necessarily mean that fishermen will not enjoy good sport later on. ~ Mr. A. Kean, conservator of fish and game, has-been kept busy restocking various lakes and, streams. Some lew weeks ago 200,000 ova and fry were liberated for Lake Kotoiti, 80,000 tor Lake Rotokakahi, 400,000 for Lake Waikaremoana, and 100,000 for Hamurana, TJtuhina and Ngongotaha streams. «ince that distribution took place 100,000 try have been liberated in the yearns o Lake Rotorua and Rotoiti and oO,OUU in Rotorua. streams. r , • The steady liberation of young nsn in the lake streams ensures a regular supply for anglers during the season, ana tit- -has been no overcrowding to™ o ' rod ; p many years. I" about 1913 * was iv-H«l advisable to net the lake «g tl.ia out the undesirables, but good roaua and motur cars have brought many mo e fishermen to the district or je«» and this has made further netting unnecessary.
