WAR RELIEF FUNDS.
- -CLAIMS COMMITTEE BUSY. That over £500,000 had been distributed ' in relief of different kinds was reported by the.finance committee of the Auck- •* ■ - land Provincial Patriotic and War Belief Association at a meeting of the exccu- •' tive-of the association yesterday- An expenditure of £5927 since : May ; 31 was announced, the balance on hand at the - * ' end of August being £98783. .his was the first time that the balance . had - " been below £100,000. TM funds of the association at the end of May amounted to iIOO-,734. No diminution in the work of the Claims Board" was; reported, the maxi- , mum number of cases still being dealt with.- During the past; three months 1510 applications for assistance were • . receive, and in the majority of cases assistance was given. The total amount " authorised by the Claims Committee durjng the past quarter was £4811. Of this disbursement 80 per cent, or about £3849 had been voted to sufferers from war disabilities or to eligible dependants. "At the present rate of distribution it was estimated that the association's own fund would be exhausted in about seven years' time. If such a forecast were •realised: it- would then have a icurv rency of "23. years which was originally laid down throughout the province as its probable duration.
