Lauy '"ape displayed a lot of speed over three furlongs'yesterday morning at Avondale, when, from almost a. standing start, she was timed to run the distance in 3-ss. This filly is a very stylish-galloper, and if capable of running out a solid five furlongs should put up a creditable showing in. the Avondale Stakes. Flying Prince, who usually races well on a heavy track, recorded a smart gallop, over live furlongs yesterday morning, and looks in great order, for his Avondale engagement. The . son of Flying King races-well when fresh and although he was not a success last season, he is expected to do better during the present term. As a two-year-old last season Awaken notched three firsts and two seconds out of ten starts, being twice successful at Ellerslic, where juvenile events are not easily won. The Chief Ruler filly is due to make her next appearance in the Flying Handicap at Avondale to-morrow, and if she races up to her last, season's form she will take some beating under her light impost of 7.3.

When' raced at. Avondale in the auturiin Prince of Orange was successful in winning.the Waitakere Handicap, seven furlongs, and to-morrow will contest the. Henderson Handicap, run, over a similar distance oii the same course. He is stated to be doing well in his training at Takanini, and after his good second to Havering in the Onslow Handicap six furlongs, at Treritham,. he is sure to get solid support.

Although not usually a • good ' track worker, Maori Boy Was responsible for a good effort when lie finished alongside Prodiee at the end of a.mile gallop at Avondale yesterday morning. The Lucullus horse had done a sound .preparation and is in tip-top condition for his Avondale Cup content, in which he, is not harshly treated, with 7.10, and It would cause 110 surprise to find him in the firing line- at the finish.

When Sir Kay acted as runner-up to Marble King in tlie President's Handicap, six furlongs, at Te Awamutu in June, lie ran a solid race, and his turn for a win should soon arrive. He has clone well since then, and Will strip a. fit horse for his engagements at the Avondale meeting. Sir Kay will contest the Champion Hack Plate to-mor-row, and;is likely to be one of tlie hardest to beat in that race.

Sports King is reported to be doing good work at Matamata. This gelding relishes the soft going, and this may be in his favour at Av.'ondale.

Wh'en Lucky Alice won the first division of the Maiden Plate at" Avondale twelve months ago, it marked her first appearance in public, and a good future was predicted for her. .However, she failed to win again during the season,, although started on over a dozen occasions. She has been brought to Avondale again and will be saddled tip for the Champion Hack Plate to-morrow, and judged by her, impressive gallop over five furlongs yesterday morning she has more than an outside chance.

The Avondale Cup candidate Prodice registered an impressive gallop over a mile on the course proper at Avondale yesterday morning, and the effort will gaiujlier strong support in theibig event to-morrow. This mare . has previously shown her ability to carry weight and win over distances exceeding ten furlongs, while another point in her favour is the fact that she has proved herself a capable galloper in heavy ground. Prodice " finished second to Historic in the Avondale CJup last season, and may go one better in that event to-morrow.

Although Biddy's Boy failed to Avin a race last season he was placed oh four occasions in juvenile events, and might have done much better only for frequent colds interfering with his preparation. He has done well throughout the winter and as he now looks much improved in every respect, better results can bo expected. Biddy's Boy has been displaying plenty of speed ill his gallops at Te Awamutu recently, and also shaped impressively when sprinted five furlongs at Avondale yesterday morning. He will open his three-year-old campaign in the Champion Hack Plate at Avondale to-morrow," and should put up a good showing in that event.

The Awapuni trainer Geo. New, who does not often bring any of his horses to the Auckland district, will have King Colossus to represent him in the Avondale Stakes to-morrow. This gelding ran second to Korokio in the Debutante Stakes at Wauganui, and that form points to him being hard to beat. He is a good looking juvenile and his appearance indicates that he is well forward, while the race lie had at Wanganui has sharpened him up considerably. The majority of those engaged in the Avondale Stakes will be having their first run in public, and it is difficult to,gauge their prospects, therefore, King Colossus is likely to get strong support.
