' Select committees were given' an opportunity of reporting to the House of Representatives this afternoon. The most interesting was a recommendation that animal foods of cereal or vegetable origin bc'placed on the free list of the Customs tariff. Members interested in wheat and barley growing took alarm, and an amendment to refer the report back to the Agricultural; and .Pastoral Committee was xinder discussion when -the dinner' adjournment was takenj thus preventing a decision,being reached. ; Early in the evening the Land and Local Bodies "Washing-up" Bills presaged the close approach of the session's end.

Urgency was accorded by the House to the completion of the debate on the committal of the Nurses and Midwives' Registration" Amendment Bill. There was again a long discussion, during which members voiced the objections of the trained Jiurses, the fear that the training of nurses in' private hospitals would prejudice the reciprocal arrangement for the recognition of the New Zealand certificate by the Nursing Council of England and Wales. The Hon. A. J. Stallwortby, Minister of Health, repeated his assurance that the nurses' status could not be prejudiced, •because the Nurses' Registration Board would still function, certificates would still be, issued only after passing the State' examination; and safeguards in regard .to status and training would be as important as;before.; On a division the motion to commit the bill was by -------- •■■_-•-

The petition of Joseph Chulav for a compassionate grant, owing to his inability to work ..through an alleged injury suffered while he was employed by the Public Works Department, was referred to, the Government for favourable consideration. The committee had no recommendation to make ori the petition of Ivan Devcich, C. W. Garton and three others, who aeked for assistance in tracing documents alleged to have been wrongfully obtained.School Committees' Allowances. The Government has decided that it is impossible, during this financial year to accede to. the request of the School Committees' Association of New Zealand to increase. ! grants for incidental allowances. The Minister of Education, in & letter to Mr. H. T. Armstrong (Lalj., Christchurch East) said it was understood that the boards would, in cases where attendance rolls were declining;, make extra provision for the cost and incidental expenses- of the schools concerned.
