MELBOURNE, this day.
There were several surprises in the first round of the amateur and professional golf championships.' D. Spence, a young professional, beat Eyre iii the open championship, one up. Other winners in section were Howard, Stewart, N&ismith, Downs, Robertso.n, Wood and Fowler. In the amateur division the South Australian, Rymill, beat last year's champion, Ryan, two and one. Sloan Morpeth, former New Zealand champion, was too strong for Morrison, and won, three and one. Other winners were Nettlefold, Hattersley, Adams, Russell, Apperly, and Edgar.
