Avrohas proved himself a good hurdler and he ran two solid races at the Wanganui meeting'. On the first.day he liad no rig-Jit to be beaten, while on Saturday he was only defeated by a head for second place. Ayro should be very hard to beat in big hurdles events next winter. Royal Acre ran two good races at the Wanganui meeting, being second on each occasion. He jumped well, and on Saturday looked to be the.winner a couple of furlongs from home, but Luminary finished with too much dash for him.. Royal Acre should be very hard to beat .in his next- few outings'." ... " La Poupee, who was third in,the Debutante Stakes at Wanganui on Saturday, is a filly by. Tea Tray from Dancing Doll, and she should be much harder to beat when she has had a little: more experience. She was finishing oit well. La Poupee cost IGOgs at the annual sales at Trcntham last Januaiy. Nukumai looked as though" he had a chance iiu - the • Gonville Hurdles- at Wanganui on Saturday when he took second position behind Royal Acre:.about three furlongs frdm home, but his effort was best he could do was to finish fourth. It looks as.though the years arc beginning to tell on him. Autopa\vw'as very unluckyto be beaten on the first day of the Wanganui spring meeting, for his rider failed to keep him going, when he was in front half-way down the straight. On Saturday, with a different jockey, he was again one of the leaders into the straight, and stayed on well to beat a bunch by a very narrow margin. - * . Pass Oil, a three-year-old by Gallaghaii. trained by F.TTiggott at O.takii ran '"well enough in Jfer races at* Wanganui to .say that' she vvill show, to> advantage before long. She.was noticed going well till the turn in the Durie Hack on Thursday, and on Saturday was. finishing on well in fourth place in the Spring Hack Handicap. Chief Clerk, who showed_up for in the Debutante Stakes at- Wariganui 011 Saturday} :is bv .Chief- Ruler from Kaserin, an American-bred mare, owned by Mr. F. Armstrong, in whose colours Chief Clerk races. He looks like a youngster who is growing fast and will probably need time before' he is seen at his best. He is trained by Mrs. A. McDonald. It was probably due to the fact, that H. Gray was aboard Pomp that he was made favourite for the Spring Hack Handicap at Wanganui' oh Saturday. ' On Thursday the best he could do. was to finish sixth in the Durie Hack, which, was his first-race for soine time, while on Saturday he was never dangerous in the running and occupied about-the same position when the post was' reached. Pomp only had one. race last season, and that was when he finished second in the Breeders' Plate at the A.J.C. spring meetirtg iii ' Sydney; With a bit more Tacing he should do better.

•King Colossus, who finished second in .the' Debutante Stakes at Wanganui on Saturday, is a half-brother by Colossus to 'Riiapapa, who -was raced successfully by Mr. W. Scholium. King Colussus liad previously slidwn that lie knew the wayto jump out and extend himself when -he figured in the Two-year-old Parade at-tlie recent Marton meeting. On Saturday he drew second position and beat all .but Korokio. He is the first of his sire's progeny to race aild looks like turning out useful. King Colossus is;engaged in the Stakes and also the Welcome Stakes at Ellerslie later on.

Korokio, who • won the Debutante Slakes, at Wanganui on Saturday, was purchased at the sales in Sydney last Easter for 70gs, and as the. stake was worth 13osovs, to the winner she is now a cheap filly, with good prospects ahead, for there *is no doubt she .'knows how to gallop. She "began very smartly from an outside position and was soon in front. King Colossus and Chief Clerk were on terms wjtli her when she turned .for home,, hut'she drew away to score very nicely. The sister to Fernden is well bred, for her great-grandam, La Chcville, was by Thunderbolt from Instep, and therefore a "sister to Aiira, the grandain of Aiirarius, who threw Desert Gold.

Laughing Prince* registered/his• third successive victory iii->the. New Zealand Eclipse Stakes- on' Saturday at Wanganui. He was ridden by f liis trainer, L. G. Morris, who was content to allow Toxeuma and Simba to carry on the running to the straight; when lie put in his claim, and scored by a nose after a most exciting race. Laughing Prince, after winning, this: event . last/ season, went amiss and was.not'started again till the winter meeting,at Wanganui inMay last. He thus missed the: New Zealand' Cup meeting, the Auckland Cup meeting and other big fixtures. If he keeps sound this season he . will' take no end of beating.ih weight-for.-age races, while- he will also be very hard -t'o.dispose of in »ny handicap- events lie -contests.

Vandyke was in good form at Wauganui last week and lie should make a good showing, in his engagements' at'Au'ckland. He is not too good at the barrier, but lie has plenty of pace and finishes on well. , The . aged hurdler Kameliameha, who has come on a lot during the past month, shaped well in a schooling bout at 'Ellerslie last Saturday morning. He is engaged in the Grey Lynn, Hurdle Race on the final day of the A'vondaie meeting. \ Simba-was produced in the New Zealand Eclipse": Stakes, at Waiigamiii -on Saturday, ,and if this colt does not win races this' season then his. looks belie him. He was having his first run" of the season and'made a good showing to the straight, where lie,, faded out! Simba was a useful' two-yeaT-old last season. Operatic-is getting through plenty of serviceable work at Ellerslie and is steadily improving in condition, but lie may require a race or two before being seen at his best.' This gelding displayed promising form last season and should do well in hack events later, for he has plenty of speed arid shapes as though he will stay on. . - • v Luminary lost his rider at the first hurdle at Wanganui on Thursday, but on Saturday he .won the Gonville Hurdles in good style. "He was soon in front, but about five 1 " furlongs from# home Royal Acre ran past him, while across, the top Nukumai also headed, him.: However, lie was only having a "breather," andvonce the straight was reached-he came with a great run,,/tor-score in easy fashion. Luminary has now won three times in his last four starts over the "battens." Toxeuma made the pace, all the way in the New Zealand Eclipse. Stakes at Wanganui 011 Saturday. He was still in front when lialf-way down the straight, but Laughing Prince gradually wore him down,, to win by the narrowest of margins. Toxeuma, -when/Ellis gave him a cut with the whip at the critical moment, seemed to waver, and it looked as though Laughing Prince would beat him decisively, but lie came again, and was just unable to reverse the position. Though beaten, Toxeuma ran a great race and was by no means disgraced.

Imamint, after her .success in the Trial Handicap "at Mart on a Wcelr previously, was made a warm favourite for the Trial Handicap, seven furlongs, at. Wanganui on s Saturday. She was always handy, hut the best she could do was to finish fourth. Imamint will have to do considerably better to have a chance in the Avondale Guineas. Arisus, the half-brother to Lysandei, is a promising sort. He ran a good race 111 the Guineas 011 Thursday at Wanganui, and on Saturday won the Trial Handicap well.* He was soon in front, and though Ganpat'ran up to him crossing the top "Arisus held 011 to score comfortably by a length. This three-year-old, though not in the same class as Cylinder, should d« well this season. Dominican, who acted as runner-up to Pennyplaiu in the Ladies. Biacclct at the Pakuranga meeting, will make' his next appearance iii the Maiden Plate at Ayplldale 011 Saturday. He-is to .be doing well in his preparation, at Takanuu and will be better conditioned than most of his opponents, but may find some of them just a bit too speedy for him over the distance. Johneen, a three-year-old -by Weatheivane from Mnritza, a mare by Martian, led from start to finish in the,Moutoa Hack Handicap, one mile and 110 . yards, at Wanganui 011 Saturday. She was challenged bv Shortly in the last half-furlong, but stayed on well to get the decision by. a neck. Jolmeen is one of T. George-S team and is, engaged at..the Avondale meeting. He is owned by Mr, J. J; Cony. : Courtesv. who is included'in the field set down to contest the.Champion Hack Plate at Avondale, is' a three-year-old sister to Honour and Episode, by Limond from Homage. She won the only two races that she contested last, season—the Nursery Handicap; five furlongs and a half, at the Hawke's Bay autumn meetino', and the Russley Plate, five fuilongSj atßiccarton,in April. She -is reputed to be a good filly, which is not surprising, bred as, she is, but if started in the big hack event slie, will riot , have an easy task." for there are several smart. gallopers. engaged in the race who will test her thoroughly. • '- ' ' ■■..' -

. ' Chrysology is likely to be., one .of the favourite division if he goes ; to f the-post in' the Maiden' Plate at Avoiidale. Lie is trained by R. Alexander and owned by Mr. T. H. Lowry, of Hawke's Bay, and is a three-year-old gelding by Psychology from Desert Gold. He contested eleven races last season, recording .two: seconds and four third placings, when competing against several noteworthy gallopeis. He was second to Watch Officer in the Wellesley Stakes," five furlongs, run in' 60Js, which was ■ a race record, , and third to Princess Betty arid'Pagauelli in the Pal-. merston North Stakes, six furlongs. He was also third to Cylinder, andJPagaiiejl 1 in the North. Island •' Challenge. Stakes,' seven furlongs, at tlie.Wellington autumn meeting, and if. he reproduces that form at Avoudale he will-take some beating-

- Courageous lias performed veiy consistently this' sea soil,.and;his; victoify. in the Higgle Handicap at Wanganui was well 'merited. After winning the Terrace Handicap, one-mile ..and-'a quarter, at-tjie. Manawatu winter meeting, he finished second in .the Neagle. Memorial atT)aLiinevirke. His. next effort was at Martoii, : where Black Mint and Paddon headed him in the. Mar ton Handicap. He did not start on the first; day, of the ;Wanga : nui meeting,, but on Saturday was saddled up for the Higgie Handicap. .' After being well back till about five furlongs from home lie commenced to. make jupiliis ground and was on'' terms with: the leaders at the top of the straight, where lie drew away, to score comfortably. If Hynanna, ridden by had not been coupled with Courageous he would have rcturned a: y cry. long price.

Mcndip raced very unluckily at. the Wanganui meeting last week. He was always prominent in both the Marangai Handicap and the Higgie Handicap, and was just "beaten at the finish- in:, each event. He is . engaged at the. Avondale meeting. - - , . ■ The Peach-Brandy three-year-old Karangapai is showing.,marked improvement in his track work and is steadily rounding up into racing condition. He is engaged in the Maiden Plate at Avondale next Saturday, but it is. doubtful if lie will be forward enough to do himself justice., However, a race or two will improve him and lie should soon lose his maiden status. • ' In his recent schooling tasks at Ellerslie.Sir Archie has been shaping as well as'ever he did and he will be given a further/opportunity to earn distinction as a hurdler at Avondale next Saturday. The Archiestown gelding was also shaping well in his schooling efforts before the Great Northern fixture, but failed to show up in tlie Penrose Hurdles, his only start at the meeting. The Arausio filly Bonnylea, who claims an .engagement in the Avondale Stakes next Saturday, is doing well at Ellerslie and W. Patterson has her. in good order for her initial.outing. She galloped very attractively over three furlongs on the No. 3 grass track last Saturday morning, when, without being by any means fully extended, she put up fast time for the distance. This filly gathers up speed very quickly and she is sure to perform well next, Saturday.

Carlaris, who is engaged in the.Kingsland Hurdles at the Avondale meeting, was brought to Ellerslie last. Saturday morning for schooling purposes and gave a good display over six fences. _ This gelding showed promising form in his first race over the "battens" by finishing second to Luminary in the Panniure Hurdles at the Great Northern meeting last June and was also going well in the Orakei Hurdles at the same meeting until lie fell. R. Hall lias the Carl Rosa gelding looking in great fettle and he should be° worth following in hurdle races this season. : ■ - ; ,

Stagliuntev -was never prominent in the Flying Handicap on the first day of the -Wanganui meeting, but he won the Owen Handicap in good style on Saturday. He was well back when they turned for home, but then came with a great run that completely silenced the opposition. His display; was quite in contrast to his first clay's effort.
