"TOTE" INVESTMENTS.

FINANCIAL BAROMETER?

DECREASE OF £118,000.

SEVEN WEEKS OF NEW SEASON,

The totalisator is regarded by many as a fairly reliable barometer of the financial position of the racing and trotting season opened at the beginning of August, and in the seven weeks since the, racing public Jiave\iuvested on the totalisator at the various meetings no less than £379,240, but this sum falls short by £118,054 10/ of the abrogate of investments in the corresponding seven weeks of last season, when the amount reachcd within £-000 of half a million. The Government takes approximately 1/6 in the £ from all totalisator investments, which means that something over £28,000 has been collected for the Treasury. The clubs receive about 2/ in the £, and their sharo of the betting on the machine for the past'seven weeks would be over £37,000. These amounts show that the public has paid over £60,000 for the privilege of having a bet on the machine. _ Below will be found the meetings held since the beginning of last month, with the totalisator figures (omitting shillings) for 1930 and 1929. Without exception this season's figures show a decrease.

" £497,900 £379,243 £115,657 In addition to tlie above meetings there was also the one-clay unemployment relief meeting of the Auckland Trotting Club, and a one-day meeting held by the Manawatu Racing Club, but as there were no corresponding meetings by these clubs last yeai - , they have not been included in the above list.
