PROWLER IN EPSOM.
WOMAN WARNED BY DOG. MAN AT CONVALESCENT HOME. A prowler, wliosc movements were highly suspicions, was disturbed while ou tlie verandah of a large dwelling, in Queen Mary Avenue, Epsom, at 11.45 last night. . Tlie house is used as a convalescent home for elderly people and it was in darkness when the man was first discovered. The proprietress this morning said a dog which sleeps on the verandah first gave the alarm by barking. A bed had been made on the verandah and tlie French windows leading, from the verandah to a large room had been left open. About 11.30 she was sitting near the windows. With the aid of an electric torch she afterwards made an inspection of the house to see that all the patients were comfortable before she herself retired. • "While I was at the back of the house I heard the dog bark," she said. "I knew by the fuss he made'that someone was about, so I walked through a room on to the verandah. As I was going through the door X heard a man jump from °the verandah on to the lawn. Walking out with my torch I flashed it around and saw a man standing up trying to hide in a tall hedge opposite the verandah. As I got down on to the lawn the man walked towards the front gate and got away. I followed him and saw that he walked swiftly down the street. "Seeing the house in darkness, r,nd noticing the windows left open, I suppose he thought it an easy way to enter," she added. "However, he would have been sorry for himself had I caught him inside, because I'm not frightened."
