SENSELESS "JOKE."
EX-SOLDIERS HOAXED. A crude sense, of humour persists in spite of years of our expensive education. "Man, able to : dfive, and do odd jobs; sleep out; apply between -7 ahd 8; returned soldier preferred," and then followed, the name of a hotel. So ran the \ advertisement. It looked genuine, and 25 ex-soldiers went out to investigate. No one : was more surprised than, the licensee. When the advertisement was pointed out to him, that was the first lie had seen of it. An ex-soldier himself, -he sympathised with the men who had been hoaxed, and very goodnaturedly gave them something to sliare among-them to. make up for having been put to the trouble of answering a false alarm, • \ • It is very .dillicult for jnormal people to understand the mentality of anyone .who would perpetrate such a trick, under the impression that it was a joke.
