PROSPECTS OF ON TOP.

(By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") CHRISTCHURCH, Friday. A lot of rain has fallen to-day and the Riccarton tracks are very soft. The position is becoming serious for trainers who are anxious to have their horses ready to race at the early spring meetings. Although Pangolin failed to secure any money at Riccarton last month, he wa* Sensible for the solid pace set m the Grand National Hurdles, while he gave a fine exhibition of jumping He has done well in his work smee then, galloping ireelv on the flat and schooling in good. style 7 With average luck he looks certain to win a hurdle race very soon. II B Berry has had On Top at Riccarton "several times lately, and the goodlooking Surveyor gelding is lta order for spring engagements. He may not be long in working his way out of the hack class. He is very forward, and he should run out a nine and a quarter well at Ashburton. Te Awhina has not been In work long, but R. Ellis has her striding along freely, and she should be ready to show her form very soon. She figures as top weight in the Ashburton Handicap, but she D, inay not be quite ready to run a mile'and a quarter, though the distance may suit her all right later in the season. She is a smart galloper Avhen she is all right, and she should do capable of something good this season. . Sleipner is training on well, and he will be one of the most forward of the Riccarton three - year - olds for early engagements. His great speed will make him very dangerous in hack sprint events, even if he fails to run on much further than six furlongs. Desert Song has done Avell under the care of R. W. King,-who took him OA-er when T. Lloyd Avent to Sydney. He raced very consistently last month, and his recent track work suggests that he will Avin in better company shortly, as he is making steady improvement. He is top weight in the Faiffield Hack Handicap at Ashburton, but his solid condition will help him at the end of a mile. C.' Emerson has the three-year-old Standard Rose looking in nice order. He has demonstrated that he has pace ami he may get on the Avinning list before the season is far advanced. He has two engagements at Ashburton, and he is likely to run Avell in whichever event he takes part.

AT TAKANINI. WHITE WINGS SPRINTS NICELY. Track conditions were satisfactory at Takanini this morning, but the Avork done did not produce anything of a sensational character.
