BILLIARDS.
AUCKLAND AMATEUR TITLE. MASSEIT DEFEATS TATE. A fairly even match resulted last night at Messrs. Billiards, Ltd. showrooms, between H. A. Massey and K. Tate, in the final of the second round for the Auckland provincial amateur title, and the Billiards Limited, Shield. Massey won by 7S points! Although he secured the lead at the start with two breaks of 21. Tate waa first to pass the 100 mark, with a slight lead of six. Massey regained the lead, but neither was really playing up to scratch form. He was able to make his lead doubly secure when he put up a good all-round break of 47. his score at this stage being 231, and Tate's 117. After this Massey forged ahead and was first to pass the 300 mark, Tate being only 200. He increased his lead by a further 37 break. His opponent added two breaks of 20 and one of 27. Tate was having the better of the game at this stage, and added a well-compiled hazard break of 40. Massey ran to points soon after by making a 28 break. The final scores were: —H, A. Massey, 500; breaks of 21. 21, 47, 37, 37 and 28. K. Tate, 422: breaks of 20, 20, 27, and 40. W. E. Hackett plays H. Randrup in the first semi-final this evening.
