The famous cup for which over two million pounds have been ex* pended by British yachtsmen in their thirteen attempts to regain it, was originally given by the Royal Yacht Squadron and valued afc 100 guineas. It was won by the schooner America at Cowee in 18S7 and given by her owners to the New York Yacht Club as as a challenge trophy.
