SOCIAL GATHERINGS.
The monthly meeting of the Northcote 'Women's Progressive League was held in the parish hall on Thursday, when Mrs. Mclaughlin presided over a large gathering. An invitation was received from the Xorthcote Ex-service Men's Association to attend a dance in aid of unemployed ex-servicemen. The Rev. F. W. Wilkes gave an instructive address on the women of India.
In connection with St. Joseph's Queen Carnival a dance was held for the Golden Queen in the Kingsford Hall, Otahuhu, last Monday evening, when over fifty couples were present. Streamer and confetti dances were held, as well as a Monte Carlo waltz, which was won by Miss McYachan and Mr. Roy Panckhurst., and a spot waltz, which was won. by Mr. and Mrs. Johnson.
The members of the Tirau Presbyterian choir entertained Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Wine at a social prior to their departure from the district. The function was held at the manse. During the evening the Rev. W. T. Brabyn presented Mrs. Wine with a handsome handbag, and in doing so referred to Mrs. Wine's faithful servicfc in the choir. Th-e recipient suitably returned thanks.
The Okauia Hall was packed on the occasion of a public farewell by settlers of the district to Mr. and Mrs". James La Trobe, who have sold their property after a, stay of some 12 years. Those who contributed to the evening were Mr. Fielding, Rev. Turner, Mr. S. Price and Mrs Clinch ("Bohemian Duo"), who each rendered several songs, while the Rev. Turner provided amusement with his well-known foil "Claude." Miss Joan Turner presided at the piano. Mr. and Mrs. La Trobe were presented with a handsome chiming clock, suitably inscribed.
On Wednesday evening the W.C.T.U. were at the Mount Albert Methodist Schoolroom to watch the model L.T.L. meeting where the official positions were all occupied by children from eight to 15 years of age. Great credit is due to the superintendents, Mrs. Kasper and Miss Fyfe, and to the children who so ably conducted the meeting. This is a good training ground for future W.C.T.U.'s and for citizens, who at a moment's notice have to conduct a public meeting. On Thursday the W.C.T.U. Convention continued its sessions, and the superintendents of the different branches gave reports. The officers were elected for the ensuing year, with Mrs. M. Richards .is president.
