COSTLY TRAM TRACKS.
MERITS OF TRACKLESS VEHICLES.
(To the Editor.)
Have the powers that be ever probed into ■;$. the advantages, or otherwise, of trackless .;, trams? These are apparently used fiuccess-,;}? fully in other parts dt" the world. Now that* ]': tie maintenance of tracks is giving such concern and becoming , a heavy charge on the city (I in the vicinity of £80,000 annu- .• ally), it seems reasonable to suppose that inquiry might be made into other systems. Particularly woull' this apply to proposed ,-J extensions. Tlje advantages, that seem most ■ apparent, of the trackless tram over the "per- Y% manent" way arc, to my mind, as follow: (1) ■ Quieter vehicles and more comfortable; (2) i; safer, in that passengers would be taken up from and put down at the kerb, and in this ' connection the trackless tram would not obstruct motor traffic as at present; (3) last, but not least, our concrete roads would be -I'M true to name and not patchy to the extent K] of about two-fifths of their surface. A beautifully crowned road of concrete would be % wonderful 'and should be everlasting: The ~~ rain, getting- through the porous centre of the present road and so finding its way under)-/-'; the concrete on either side, must be detri-J----mental in its .undermining action. ~/..:.
