NAVAL BARRACKS.
BELAYED CONSTRUCTION.
REPAIRS TO PHILOMEL.
(By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.)
WELLINGTON", Thursday. The announcement was made in the annual report on naval defence tabled to-day in the House of Representatives that owing to financial stringency it will not be possible to commence the construction before June 1 next of the naval barracks at Devonport, which are to replace the Philomel.
Mentioning that a site for the tarracks had been selected at Devoiiport, the report added that seven sections of land had already 'been purchased and at least two, and possibly four, additional sections would bo required to complete the site.
As the result of the postponement of the building of the barracks arrangements were being made for a survey of the Philomel to be made to ascertain how long she could continue to act in her present capacity. It was considered that she would probably be fit to continue' for another two or three years, provided a certain amount of repairs were carried out.
