GOODS SOLD OH SUNDAY.
„ SHOPKEEPER FINED.
"NOT FAIR TO OTHERS."
A fine of £5 and costs was imposed on Anita Pickering in the Police Court this morning on a charge of selling goods valued at 1/ on Sunday, August 10. She was convicted and discharged on another charge of exposing goods for sale on, Sunday. Defendant said the sale took place during her absence and against her orders, but she took full responsibility. For eight years the front of the shop had been uncovered on Sundays. Recently she had placed a screen over the window, but it had a bad effect on the restaurant, which was run in conjunction with the shop.
Sub-Inspector Shanahan said the police had been trying to stop the sale of goods on Sundays, and he asked the magistrate to impose the maximum fine, as defendant had been before- the Court twice before on similar charges. "This selling of goods on Sundays is not fair to others," said Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., in imposing the fine.
